The school board’s spotlight on students this year focuses on students who excel in the arts, community service and physical education. The students chosen, including Alea Tindal, who could not attend the meeting, were hand picked after their contribution to the Coal Miner’s Celebration earlier this year.
The September meeting of White County School Board was very optimistic, as the board elected chair, vice-chair and committee positions and unveiled the fruits of the summer’s labor on numerous construction projects across the district.

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development is now accepting applications for Tennessee Downtowns, a competitive community improvement program for communities seeking to revitalize traditional commercial districts. The program is open to communities with downtown commercial districts established at least 50 years ago and whose citizens are ready to organize efforts for downtown revitalization. Applications are available online at www.tennesseemainstreet.org and must be completed by Thursday, Nov. 1.
“A healthy downtown historic district is a sign of a vibrant local economy,” ECD Commissioner Bill Hagerty said. “Making our downtowns even better places to live and work can pay dividends in terms of attracting new jobs and investment.”… CONTINUED

Floyd Bennie Dodson, 61, of Spencer, passed away Sept. 13, 2012, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Mr. Dodson was born Jan. 15. 1951, in Sparta, to Arlis and Dollie Cagle Dodson.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Sept. 17, 2012 at Spencer Funeral Home.The family will receive friends 3-9 p.m., Sept. 15; 8 a.m.-9 p.m., Sept. 16; and 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 17, at the funeral home.

Mary Etta Dodson, 77, of Cookeville, passed away Sept. 13, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Funeral service will be noon, Sept. 18, 2012, at Whitson Funeral Home, in Cookeville, with burial in Old Bon Air Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-9 p.m. Sept. 17, and 7 a.m.-noon, Sept. 18, at the funeral home.

Paula Ruth Stone Tompkins, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 12, 2012, at Centennial Medical Center, in Nashville,
Mrs. Tompkins was born Sept. 23, 1944, in White County, to Dennis T. and Daisy Steele Stone.
She was a hairdresser.
Mrs. Tompkins was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Frank Tompkins; brothers, Bobby Stone and Charles Stone and sister Dean Fleaher.
Survivors include two sisters, Dixie Phifer, Sandra Lewis, both of Sparta; brother, Jimmy Stone and wife Bonita, of Maryville; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Stone, of Cookeville; and several nieces and nephews.

Alene Bryant Adams, 69, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 14, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Adams was born Nov. 6, 1942, in the Mobry Community of White County, to Samuel E. and Bessie Cleo Howard Bryant.
She attended the Tennessee School for the Blind. I
Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Adams; brother, Robert Bryant; and sisters, Margaret Bryant and Winnie Ellen Bryant.

The Warrior football team broke into the win column with a 12-7 victory over Coffee County in Mamchester Friday night.
A solid defensive effort coupled with a pair of touchdowns, one in each half, gave Coach Matthan Houser his first victory as a head coach.
Not only was it the first win of the season, but it was a District 6AAA victory keeping the Warriors playoff hopes alive.
