Sheriff beefs up patrol in Doyle

Sheriff Oddie Shoupe says he wants White County residents to know he is listening to them, and is increasing law enforcement patrols in Doyle.
The sheriff says that he has an officer in Doyle everyday, but if residents witness someone speeding through their neighborhood, they should call 311 to report it and the Doyle officer will quickly respond.
“I don’t know what they need unless they call. I have received one call from the Mayor, but I have not received calls from anyone else. If you call and report it, we will have an officer down here in no time.”

Nell M. Jones, 87 of Sparta, passed away Sept. 9, 2012, at Bethesda Health Care Center, in Cookeville.
Ms. Jones was born March 28, 1925, in White County, to Tennie Elizabeth Greene Jones and Clarence Lee Jones Sr.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Gertrude Thomas Jones; brother, Charlie Leon Jones; and brother-in-law, Louis Lafever.
She attended White County schools and was employed at Wagner Manufacturing until an automobile accident, in 1972.
She blessed her family, friends, and neighbors by serving many extravagant meals with genuine Southern hospitality.

Mary E. Sliger Allison, 86 of Sparta, passed away Sept. 7, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Allison was born April 4, 1926, in Putnam County. She was the daughter of Joseph and Myrtle Tollison Sliger.
She was preceded in death by parents; husband, Willie “Bill” Allison; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her daughter, Jeanette Allison Herren and husband Milton; her son Bobby Allison and wife Patricia, all of Sparta; four sisters, Shirley Henley, of Cookeville, Plina Wilson, of Cookeville, Jean Rice, of Cookeville, Dori Loftis and husband Bill, of Florida; one brother, Lynn Sliger and wife Arlena, of Baxter; four grandchildren, Terry and Andrea … CONTINUED

Frederick Messerschmitt Jr.

Frederick Messerschmitt Jr., 53, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 6, 2012, St. Thomas Hospital, in Nashville, after a long illness.
Mr. Messerschmitt was born Jan. 2, 1959, in New Jersey, to Frederick Messerschmitt and Helen Yourkonis Messerschmitt.
Funeral service was 2 p.m., Sept. 9, 2012, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial at Plainview Cemetery, in the Cassville community.
Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

TennCare spend-down begins September 15

TennCare’s Standard Spend Down program will be offering open enrollment opportunities will to new applicants Thursday, Sept. 13, beginning at 6 p.m.
The Spend Down program is available for a limited number of people who are low-income or have high medical bills and are aged, blind, disabled or the caretaker of a Medicaid eligible child. The medical bills must meet the “spend down” threshold to qualify.

$75,000 bond set in case of alleged elder abuse

Sparta Police Department, acting on a call from the Adult Protective Services, investigated a reported case of elder abuse that led to the arrest of a Sparta resident for kidnapping and elder abuse.
According to a report by Investigator Travis Barker, Adult Protective Services informed the department about concerns they had for an 83-year-old male that had been admitted to Highlands Medical Center on August 22.
Investigator Barker states that in the investigation, enough evidence was gathered to charge Martika Divencenczo, of 129 N. Church Street, with aggravated kidnapping and elder abuse.
Divencenzo was booked into the White County Jail on Aug. 31 on a $75,000 … CONTINUED

World War I uniform donated to museum as surprise to sons

A rainy and dreary Saturday morning turned into a bright ray of sunshine when two brothers, Denny Walker and Russel Walker, both of Sparta, were surprised by their children with a special presentation at White County Veterans’ Museum. The World War I uniform of Wesley Monroe Walker, Denny’s and Russel’s father, had been enshrined in a shadow box, with medals attached, which included Wesley Monroe’s American Legion pin. The planning stages of the surprise began several weeks ago and concluded Sept. 8, 2012, when Matt Elmore, White County Veterans’ Service Officer, made the official presentation. Turnovers doom Warriors in loss to Tigers

The DeKalb County Tigers had not won in Sparta since 1979, but they put that streak to rest in a big way Friday night in a match-up between two neighbors.

Golf District Tourney today

Senior leaders. A.J. Wilkerson (standing) and Jesse Villard will be looking to try and lead the Warrior golfers to the region tournament when the District 6AAA tournament tees off at the McMinnville Country Club. The top three teams and the top five individuals not on those teams earn spots in the Region 3AAA tournament.

While most of the WCHS fall sports teams are not even to the midway point of their season, the golf team is already into postseason play.

The WCHS cross country team traveled to Oakville, Alabama for the 12th Annual Chickasaw Trails Cross Country Invitational.
The Warriors and Warriorettes had an impressive day as everyone improved on their times.
Hunter McCoy inched closer to the school record for the boys with another new personal record (PR) of 18:18, good enough for 70th place. Jimmy Wallace improved his time by nearly two minutes with a new … CONTINUED

WCHS soccer and volleyball pick up road wins

Both the Warriorette volleyball and soccer teams got back in the win column on Thursday in road contests.
The WCHS volleyball team logged their first district win of the year with a victory over Cumberland County in Crossville.
The Warriorettes took the 3-1 win over the Lady Jets.
WCHS won the first game 25-20 and followed with a 25-21 victory in game two. CCHS logged the narrow 25-23 win in three forcing a fourth game. The Warriorettes polished off the match with the 25-22 victory in that game.
