Golf District Tourney today

Senior leaders. A.J. Wilkerson (standing) and Jesse Villard will be looking to try and lead the Warrior golfers to the region tournament when the District 6AAA tournament tees off at the McMinnville Country Club. The top three teams and the top five individuals not on those teams earn spots in the Region 3AAA tournament.

While most of the WCHS fall sports teams are not even to the midway point of their season, the golf team is already into postseason play.

Cross country improves times in Alabama race

The WCHS cross country team traveled to Oakville, Alabama for the 12th Annual Chickasaw Trails Cross Country Invitational.
The Warriors and Warriorettes had an impressive day as everyone improved on their times.
Hunter McCoy inched closer to the school record for the boys with another new personal record (PR) of 18:18, good enough for 70th place. Jimmy Wallace improved his time by nearly two minutes with a new … CONTINUED

WCHS soccer and volleyball pick up road wins

Both the Warriorette volleyball and soccer teams got back in the win column on Thursday in road contests.
The WCHS volleyball team logged their first district win of the year with a victory over Cumberland County in Crossville.
The Warriorettes took the 3-1 win over the Lady Jets.
WCHS won the first game 25-20 and followed with a 25-21 victory in game two. CCHS logged the narrow 25-23 win in three forcing a fourth game. The Warriorettes polished off the match with the 25-22 victory in that game.

Weighing the pros and cons of prostate cancer screening

You probably wouldn’t consider purchasing a new car, booking a vacation, or remodeling your home without doing some research first, right? The American Cancer Society believes people should be just as conscientious when it comes to making decisions about their health, especially men who are faced with the question of whether or not to get screened for prostate cancer.
The American Cancer Society recommends men make an informed decision with their health care provider about screening for prostate cancer – after learning about the uncertainties, risks, and potential benefits of screening – typically starting at age 50. Carl Lloyd Copeland

Carl Lloyd Copeland, 72, of Beechmont, Ky., formerly of Sparta, passed away Sept. 5, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Copeland was born Sept. 26, 1939, in Sparta, to Clayton and Vallie Milligan Copeland.
Survivors include his son, Tim Copeland and wife Donna, of Sparta; daughter, Susan Roberts and husband Jeff, of Decatur, Ala.; stepson, Wesley Miller and wife Erika, of Beechmont, Ky.; six grandchildren; sister, Clayta Miller, of Franklin; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m., Sept. 7, 2012, at Copeland Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sept. 6, at Tucker Funeral Home, in Beechmont, Ky.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Warriors “turnover” win to DeKalb County

DeKalb County foiled the Warriors’ attempt at their first win of the season Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
The Tigers (4-0) took advantage of seven Warrior turnovers in the game and rolled to the 58-7 victory over WCHS (0-4). 
The Warriors trailed 13-7 late in the second quarter, but keyed by WCHS miscues, DeKalb County finished the game scoring 45 unanswered points.

The Warriors will travel to Manchester next Friday to take on Coffee County in a District 6AAA battle between two winless teams. 

Raymond Paul Kublick

Raymond Paul Kublick, 72, of Spencer, passed away Sept. 6, 2012, at his home.
Mr. Kublick was born July 29, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Walter and Cornelia Knatiuk Kublick.
A celebration of life memorial service will be 6 p.m., Sept. 13, 2012, at Laurel Creek Baptist Church.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elzora Marie Ogle Baker, 1929-2012

Elzora Marie Ogle Baker, 83, of Fairgrove, Mich., formerly of Sparta, passed away Sept. 6, 2012, at her residence.
Mrs. Baker was born April 3, 1929, in Sevierville, the daughter of Robert and Rosa Maples Ogle.
She and Virgil Lee Baker were united in marriage, in Detroit, in 1954. Mrs. Baker worked for General Plating, in Detroit, more than 20 years. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, cross-stitch, fishing, hunting, boating, riding motorcyles, nurturing (being a grandma), gardening and watching NASCAR, especially Jeff Gordon.

Dorothea Dean Bauer, 77, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 5, 2012, at her residence.
Mrs. Bauer was born Oct. 24, 1934, in DeRossett, to Hershel and Ethel Wright Guy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, James Bauer; son, Anthony Mayle; brother, James Hershel Guy; and sister, Juanita Guy Daniel.

Doyle residents dispute new speed bumps

City hall was packed with standing room only at the Sept. 4 meeting of Doyle Mayor and Aldermen, as agitated residents sought to speak their minds on the installation of three speed bumps on Doyle and Meeks streets as voted on by the board at last month’s meeting.
Tina Fults, resident of Wallace Street, first addressed the board by presenting them with a petition signed by approximately 90 residents of the Wallace Subdivision who do not want the new speed bumps installed in their neighborhood. She also stated the residents want the current speed bumps taken out and

Head-on collision at dangerous curve sends one to hospital

 A head-on collision at around 1 p.m., on Sept. 4, sent one to Highalnds Medical Center and left another with minor cuts and abrasions on his arm. The crash occurred on Sullivan Knowles Road at the curve in front of the Bob Cunningham residence, which is notorious for crashes, particularly on damp days.
