Girl Scouts prepare holiday meals

On Nov. 24, 2012, White County Girl Scouts came together to prepare and serve a hot meal for Thanksgiving for free to anyone who needed a meal for the holiday. The meal consisted of turkey, dressing, gravy, potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls and dessert. The girls also made sweet tea and coffee.
Hog Wild BBQ smoked the turkeys, and the Girl Scouts got together on Friday night to pull the meat from the freshly smoked birds. They had approximately 280 pounds of turkey for the meal. WCSD warns residents about holiday burglaries and thefts

As the holiday season quickly approaches and families hustle and bustle around town to pick out the perfect Christmas gifts for their loved ones, thieves are preparing to indulge in the gifts that you have worked hard to purchase for friends and family.
The White County Sheriff Department has already received many burglary reports recently and offers several tips to protect yourself and to keep your presents and possessions out of the hands of thieves and burglars during the holidays.

Fall Creek Falls State Park Celebrates Christmas on the Mountain November 30 through December 2

 Fall Creek Falls State Park will herald in the holidays with its annual Christmas on the Mountain Celebration, slated for Friday, Nov. 30 through Sunday, Dec. 2, at the park’s Inn and Conference Center.
In addition to a number of activities for all ages, the three-day celebration will feature handmade crafts, candies and breads. The Inn will be adorned with holiday decorations and various musical groups and choirs will perform throughout the weekend.

W.C. Dodson

W.C. Dodson, 74, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 28, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Dodson was born Aug. 28, 1938, in White County, to Herbert Leon Dodson Sr. and Sally Denton Dodson.
He was a lifelong farmer and resident of the Eaton Community of White County. He was past president of both the White County Farm Bureau and Farmer’s Co-op, secretary of the White/Van Buren Cattlemen’s Association and member of Sparta First Baptist Church, but above all else he was a devoted husband, father and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Martha Sue Mason, H.L. Dodson Jr., Lestrene “Less” Meadows, Ernestene … CONTINUED

A senior thesis exhibition in painting by Virginia Sue Jolly, titled “Reflections in Recollections,” will be on display Dec. 2-8, 2012, in the gallery of the Bryan Fine Arts building on campus at Tennessee Technological University, in Cookeville.
Jolly, of White County, was always creative as a child. Her interest in drawing and painting followed her through school. As her interest in painting continued, she began to collect objects that held significant meaning to her. She uses color and loose brushstrokes to convey personal experiences and emotions and to bring out personality traits and characteristics of people to whom the objects are associated.

National auction winner takes flight with Aaron Tippin in Sparta

A national auction held by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, a foundation to benefit their mission to keep pilots safe and safeguard the future of general aviation, recently awarded a flight from the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport in Sparta to the highest bidder with country star Aaron Tippin in his World War II era T-6 Texan airplane.
Mike Bush and Karen Woodford of Suwanne, Ga. won the Night for Flight Auction with their bid of nearly $3,000 on Oct. 13. They traveled to Sparta on Nov. 16 to take the once-in-a-lifetime experience of a flight with Tippin.

Frederick Allen Erney

Frederick Allen Erney, 75, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 27, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Erney was born July 10, 1937, in Noblesville, Ind., to Clarence E. and Ada Louise Statzer Erney.
Survivors include his wife, Nina Sue Ledford Erney; children, Darryl Erney and wife Anna, Cheryl L. Erney Johnson and husband Charles, Barry D. Erney and wife Sonda; grandchildren, Samantha Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Joshua Erney, Amanda Erney, Matthew Erney, Jessica Erney Iniguez, Neikka Erney, Mykka Erney, Jamie Erney; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at a later date.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jobless rate increases by small margin

October 2012 unemployment rates were released last week by Tennessee Department of Labor and showed White County listed at 11 percent, up from 10.9 percent in September 2012.
White County’s October 2012 figure is also up from the October 2011 number, which was listed at 10.3 percent.
In reviewing the past 40 years in the month of October, this year’s October unemployment figure for White County ranks as the sixth highest. First place for the month of October went to 1982, with 22.8 percent, followed by 1986, with 13.8 percent; 2009, 13.2 percent; 1975, 11.6 percent; and 1983, 11.2 percent.

Peters allegedly cooking meth in parents’ home

A Sparta man who had reportedly departed his residence to check into a rehab facility allegedly left behind an active meth lab in his bedroom at his parents’ home, which they promptly reported to White County Sheriff Department.
Officers received the call from the parents of Kenneth Wayne Peters, 43, on Nov. 26. The homeowners reportedly told officers they believed items they had discovered in their son’s bedroom were related to drugs.
Deputy Donnie Qualls responded to the residence at 177 Corolla Road and recognized the items as possible components of a methamphetamine lab.

WCHS teams overcome slow starts for wins at McMinn County Monday

A.J. Wilkerson and Loren Foster led the Warriors and Warriorettes in scoring in the WCHS wins at McMinn County. Foster poured in 25 points for the girls and Wilkerson tallied 23 for the boys.

Long road trips can sometimes make things tough for sports teams and such might have been the case for both the Warriors and Warriorettes Monday when they traveled to Athens to take on the McMinn County teams.
Both teams had to overcome slow starts before finally picking up wins.

The White County Middle School teams showed no ill effects from the holiday break as they swung back into action with a quartet of wins over visiting South Franklin on Monday.

Cookeville officer is injured in head-on crash in White Co.

A Cookeville police officer was driving home in his patrol car to his residence on Fanchers Mill Road on the morning of Nov. 24 when he reportedly crashed into a tanker truck carrying 2,600 gallons of milk on Old Kentucky Road.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Chris Adams, Norman Ballard, 28, of Dunlap, was traveling north on Old Kentucky in a Sullens Transport tanker truck.
Trooper Adams said Cookeville Police Officer Chris Ferguson, 31, of Sparta, was traveling south on Old Kentucky Road and had just passed the Bakers Crossroads intersection when he reportedly crossed the center line, hitting the front left tire area of Ballard’s truck.… CONTINUED
