Road to Recovery: American Cancer Society program needs White County volunteers

Cancer has a way of evoking a mixture of emotions. It can also wear a person down physically.
Grueling radiation and chemotherapy treatments have made it difficult for Bill Hurteau, director of the White County Heritage Museum, to get to and from appointments.
He was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer nearly three years ago.
He’s still battling the disease which means he spends a lot of time in the doctor’s office.
“When you get cancer, there are tons of doctors,” he said “I’ve spent my whole life recently going to doctors … I usually see at least two or three a week.”

93,000 would be affected by ending landline subsidy

A bill backed by telephone service provider AT&T that has been circulating the Tennessee legislature is seeking to end a subsidy that provides a $3.50 per month discount to landline telephone service for more than 93,000 low income residents under a program known as Tennessee LifeLine.
The bill, known as HB 0972 or SB 1180, seeks to revise provisions concerning the Tennessee Regulatory Authority’s power to regulate telecommunications providers. One of the ways it aims to do so is by prohibiting TRA from mandating discounts on retail telecommunication services or equipment without providing reimbursements to those carriers.

Blaylock remembers his days as a member of the National Guard

These days, Larry Blaylock is enjoying retirement by spending time with his family and time on his houseboat.
However, things were quite a bit different a few decades ago.
In 1972, when he was a senior in high school, Blaylock made the decision to enlist in the military.
During a time when the draft was still in place, Blaylock says he wanted to enlist rather than be drafted.
“I had three brothers that were in the Marine Corps.,” he said. “Of course, after talking with them, I didn’t want to join the Marine Corps.”

Fugitive arrested

Officers with White County Sheriff Department have arrested a fugitive from Georgia after they responded to an E-911 call about a suspicious individual on Radio Lane.
According to Det. Chris Isom, who serves as public information officer for the sheriff department, Sgt. Nigel McQueen and Deputy Tommy Cowden responded to the scene on Feb. 25, 2013. When the two officers arrived, they reportedly located the individual, Wallace Lee McCormick, 42, of Sparta, asleep in a vehicle.
After a check of McCormick’s driver license, they were advised he was reportedly wanted in Georgia for violation of a protective order.

Don Owen Howell, 73, of Doyle, passed away March 2, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. Howell was born Feb. 11, 1940, in White County, to Walter and Versie Steward Howell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Garey Howell; one sister and her husband, JoAnn and Ross Price; two brothers-in-law, John “Red” Goodwin, Vergil Clouse; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Virgie Vinson.

Mrs. Murdock was born Dec. 3, 1939, to Freeling Simpson Robinson and Altie Jane Nabors Robinson.

James William Brimer

James William Brimer, 79, of Doyle, passed away March 1, 2013, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Brimer was born May 17, 1933, in Van Buren County, to Joe Denny and Sarah Katherine Wilson.
He was a member of Ole Country Church and served in the National Guard. He was also a county school bus driver for many years and a sawmill worker.
Mr. Brimer was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Rufus Brimer; and a sister, Ethel Brimer.
