Baseball players receive postseason honors

All District 6AAA. Nine Warrior baseball players earned All District honors during the spring of 2013. They are (l to r): Adam Farley (honorable mention), Dustin Cole (second team), Ethan M. Roberts (first team), Kane Young (second team), Kade Howard (honorable mention), Michael Sain (first team), Jake Young (first team), Holden Null (honorable mention) and Jalon Foster (first team).

The finishing touches were put on the 2013 Warrior baseball season with a banquet on Tuesday celebrating the season as a team and also distributing post-season honors.

WCHS youth basketball camp dates set

The White County High School basketball coaches have set the dates for their annual youth basketball camps at Roy Sewell Gymnasium.
First up will be the Warriorette camp, which is set for May 28-30. It is open for students that will be enrolled in grades 3-8 for the 2013-14 school year. (Younger ages must be approved by camp staff.)
The camp will be from 9-11 a.m. on May 28 and 29. The 30th is tournament day and will last from 9 a.m. to noon.
The cost of the girls’ camp is $40 per player. The camp instructors will be Coach Haley, Coach Nathan Aaron and Warriorette players.

Dollar General to hold career fair May 18

In its effort to hire 10,000 new employees in May, Dollar General will host a career fair at Dollar General located at 427 West Bockman Way, in Sparta, Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to attract new store candidates to join its thriving and growing organization. This event will be one of approximately 170 nationwide career fairs held on Saturday throughout the 40 states the retailer serves.

Bonnie Stockton celebrates 90th birthday

With a sweet smile and a sweet spirit, Bonnie Stockton is anxious to celebrate her 90th birthday with all her friends.

She is still just as beautiful today as she was when she was a teenager.
Bonnie Qualls Stockton will be celebrating her 90th birthday, on May 26. Her family and friends are hosting a celebration beginning at 2 p.m., May 25, at Bear Cove Church Fellowship Hall. Bonnie is the mother of three and the grandmother of seven. She also has several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Voyles advances to state meet again!

Carolyn J. Clark DeBerry

Carolyn J. Clark DeBerry, 67, of Sparta, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013, at Baptist Hospital, in Nashville.
Mrs. DeBerry was born July 14, 1945, in Cookeville, to Wheeler B. and Eula Mae Massa Johnson.
She was a member of the American Bridge Club.
Mrs. DeBerry was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Clark; son, Freddie Clark; and husband, Dr J.T. DeBerry.

E-911 to begin training, certifying dispatchers in-house

The E-911 board is making major cuts to their budget in preparation for carrying their load of health insurance costs under the Affordable Care Act, and part of those cuts includes no longer paying to send new dispatchers to other counties to receive their training.
The members of the board were all presented with a document prepared by Director Greg England, which outlined the number of employees hired and those who have either quit or been dismissed in the 14-month period that he has held the director position.

Central Church of Christ welcomes new preacher

Brian McCutchen settles into his new role as preacher at Sparta’s Central Church of Christ.

A calling is how Brian McCutchen describes how he came to be a preacher. It’s also what brought him to Sparta.
In March, McCutchen left his position at a church in Aiken, SC, to come Sparta.
Originally from St. Louis, Mo.,, McCutchen, along with his wife of 25 years, and his two children, are still settling into small town living.
McCutchen, who has been in ministry for 25 years, officially began his new role at Central Church of Christ in March.

Gary Lynn Ward

Gary Lynn Ward, 51, of Sparta, passed away May 11, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. Ward was born Aug. 31, 1961, in Van Buren County, to Wilmer and Gladys Marie Young Ward.
He was a sawmill worker and avid sports fan.
Mr. Ward was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jerry Ward and Kenneth Ward.
Survivors include his two brothers, Eugene Ward and wife Debbie, Dale Ward, all of Sparta; two sisters, Brenda Rich, of Dandridge, Judy Throckmorton and husband Rick, of Cookeville;
sister-in-law, Darlene Ward, of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.

There have been some big changes on the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport’s Board of Directors, with new officers and board members introduced at the May 14 meeting.
Board member and head of the pilot committee Will Roberson was nominated by board member Mike Atwood to serve as chairman of the board. This motion was seconded and unanimously passed.
Atwood was nominated, and unanimously approved, as vice-chair.
One of the two new board members, Dr. Daniel Coonce who replaced Bob Mackie on the board, will serve as secretary/treasurer.

Pope garners postseason honors

Raven Pope, a 2011 graduate of White County High School, just finished up her sophomore season of softball for Tennessee Temple University.
Pope had another standout season on the diamond for the Crusaders.
The centerfielder was not only named to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Mid-East Region team, but also earned second team NCCAA All-American honors for the second year in a row.
The Crusaders in just their second year of softball competition advanced to the Mid-East Region championship game losing to Union University in the title game.

Shannon Kathlene Walbourn, 30, of McMinnville, passed away May 6, 2013.
Mrs. Welbourn Dec. 17, 1982, in Wichita, Kan., to Danny and Shirley Stewart Glover.
A memorial service will be held at later date.
