Burritt College Museum opens with new summer schedule

It’s been 165 years since Burritt College opened its doors to the first class of students in Spencer. Though the school could not endure the Great Depression, the rise in free public education and World War I, there has been a strong urge to protect the heritage of the school and what it meant to Van Buren County.
The school was founded in 1848, and somehow survived the loss of male students who had been sent to war during the Civil War, and being demolished by Federal troops and their horses encamping in the buildings.

WCHS baseball ends District 6AAA skid

Safe at home. Michael Sain slides safely home despite a collision at the plate and scores the first run for WCHS in the 4-2 win over Cumberland County on Tuesday. The win ensures the Warriors will get to host the play-in game Saturday at 6 p.m. The opponent will be the Jets again.

The Warrior baseball team ended a seven-game District 6AAA losing skid when they traveled to Cumberland County Tuesday and picked up the 4-2 victory over the Jets.
Even with one game remaining in the district, the win ensures that WCHS will get to host the 6AAA tournament play-in game. That will be played Saturday in … CONTINUED

District tourney time for WCHS teams

Preparing for tournament time. The Warriorette softball team, shown above in an infield huddle, will begin play in the 6AAA double elimination tournament Thursday at 5 p.m. in Cookeville against Cumberland County.

As the regular season wraps up, the White County High School spring sports teams head into the postseason with many getting that tournament action underway this week.
The WCHS soccer team still has one regular season game remaining. They are scheduled to host Bledsoe County Thursday at 6 p.m. in the home finale. The four seniors will be honored at halftime.

Velma Ray Rogers

Velma Ray Rogers, 98, of Spencer, passed away April 29, 2013.
Mrs. Rogers was born May 7, 1914, in Pikeville, to Effie Walker Seals and John Pearson Seals.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., May 2, 2013, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-9 p.m., May 1, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m., May 2, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
