9th grade teams open with wins

The White County High School ninth grade teams opened their season with a pair of wins over visiting Cannon County on Monday night.
The Warriors rolled to the dominating 53-21 win in the nightcap.

Michael Thomas Ervin, 54 of Sparta, formerly of Charleston, S.C., passed away Nov. 17, 2013. at his home.
The family has chosen cremation without any planned services.
Heritage Funeral Home and Cremation Services, in Chattanooga, was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Mitchell Jolley

Virginia Mitchell Jolley, 95, a retired Memphis City school teacher, passed away Nov. 11, 2013, at Bright Glade Convalescent Center, where she had been a resident in recent years.
Ms. Jolley grew up in Whiteville, Tenn., and received her bachelor’s degree in science and music from Blue Mountain College. She later received her master’s degree in education from the University of Memphis. For more than 30 years Ms. Jolley taught science at Snowden Junior High School.
She leaves three sons, Bro. Timothy Jolley, of Grahamstown, South Africa, Charles Jolley, of Roanoke, Texas, William Jolley, of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a brother, Dr. Charles Mitchell, of Sparta.

Larry David Greene

Larry David Greene, 58, passed away Oct. 30, 2013, at his home in Grandview, Mo., after an heroic battle with prostate cancer.
A memorial service was held Oct. 7, 2013, at McGilley and George Funeral Home, in Grandview, Mo.
Mr. Greene was born Oct. 30, 1954, in Detroit, Mich.
He attended school in Harper Woods, Mich. He graduated from South Lake High, in St. Clair Shores, Mich., where he played drums. He went on to play drums and do sound work for the Marshall Tucker Band.
Mr. Greene was a summa cum laude graduate of Macomb Community College, with a degree in mechanical engineering, in 1996. He attended … CONTINUED

Kenneth “Ken” Harlan Simmons

Kenneth “Ken” Harlan Simmons, 87, of Cookeville passed away Nov. 17, 2013, at NHC Healthcare of Cookeville.
Mr. Simmons was born July 25, 1926, in Jacksonville, Fla., to James Henry and Nola Ethel Geer Simmons.
He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II, in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean Conflict and later as a member of the Air National Guard. He retired from the Caterpillar Tractor Co. where he worked as a material controller, with 40 years of service. He had been a member of Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ since moving to Cookeville, in 1997. He enjoyed clock-making.

Edna Lucile Whiteaker Jackson, 87, of the Camp Heights community of White County, passed away on Nov. 19, 2013, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
She was the daughter of Eddie Mc Daniel Whiteaker and Mary Margaret Eller Whiteaker, born April 25, 1926, in White County.
Mrs. Jackson was a member of Central Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Andrew Landon Jackson Sr.; and sons, Donald Eddie Jackson and Andrew Landon Jackson Jr.

Junior Hodge

Junior Hodge, 88, of the Bon Air community of White County, passed away Nov. 6, 2013, at his home, after an extended illness.
Mr. Hodge was born Dec. 11, 1924, in White County, to Will and Theori Prater Hodge.
He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, in World War II, Company C 2nd Pioneer Battalion,18th Marine Regiment and 2nd Marine Division.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Harold Hodge and wife Veda.

Brenda Nell Young Spivey, 52, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 18, 2013, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Mrs. Spivey was born April 5, 1961, in White County, to James Edward and Anna Pauline Cumby Young.
She was a former shirt factory employee.
Mrs. Spivey was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Edward Lee “Pete” Young.

Margie E. Felton, 83, passed away Nov. 12, 2013, at Sheltering Arms Home, in Palmer.
Mrs. Felton was bon Feb. 21, 1930, in Jasper, to Luther Bryan and Della Ophelia Caldwell Johnson
She was a member of the Church of Christ attending at Gruetli-Laager.
Mrs. Felton was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry Paul Felton; stepson, Thomas Felton; sisters, Irene Pickett, Willa Mae Collins; and brothers, Mitchell, Sydney and Hammon Johnson.

The following are the latest results reported from middle school basketball.
In their most recent outing, the eighth grade teams hosted Harris Middle School from Shelbyville Monday in Central Tennessee Conference action and ended with a split.
The Warriorettes had on hold to secure the 43-42 win after building a 31-16 halftime lead.

Guarded on all sides. Cade Crosland handles the pressure well from not only a Dragon defender, but also the York student section. The Warriors outscored the Dragons 24-15 in the final period for the 64-58 victory, their third in as many games this season.

Taking aim for 1,000. Loren Foster gets ready to release for a three pointer that just happened to be the 1,000th point of her high school career. Foster hit eight threes in the game which is also a single game Warriorette record. WCHS improved to 2-1 with the 74-31 win over York Institute.

Deputy DA McKenzie seeking 13th District Criminal Court judge seat

Running for criminal court seat. Deputy District Attorney, Gary McKenzie, has announced his candidacy for the 13th Judicial District Criminal Court Judge.

After 13 years of trying cases in criminal court, Deputy District Attorney Gary McKenzie felt that it was time for a big change, a change that could have him making rulings on cases rather than prosecuting them.
On Nov. 11, McKenzie, who is the lead prosecutor of homicide and violent crimes in Cumberland, White and Dekalb counties, announced his candidacy for Criminal Court Judge for the 13th Judicial District, a seat currently held by Judge Leon Burns, who is not seeking re-election.
