WCHS freshman teams sweep Warren County

The White County High School freshman teams finally got back in action after being idle for a couple of weeks.
Both teams picked up wins over visiting Warren County Tuesday at Roy Sewell Gymnasium and improved to 2-0 on the season.

US Bank Joins Fight Against Cystic Fibrosis with Christmas for a Cause

On Dec. 10, at 5 p.m., US Bank will be hosting Christmas for a Cause to auction decorated Christmas trees and wreaths for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
For seven years, US Bank has held this auction for a different cause.
Roy Whited, the auctioneer for this yearly event free-of-charge, has a son, Parker, who is stricken with cystic fibrosis. Thus, US Bank has chosen to donate the funds accumulated at the fundraiser to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of Roy and Parker.

Vonette Murphy and a group of volunteers visit the White County jail at the invitation of the sheriff, Oddie Shoupe, for a 12-step addiction program; the program is not funded by any group and is run by the volunteers themselves. Every 12 weeks, 20 new people who sign up for the classes are admitted to the program. Four women and four men go in weekly to speak with the inmates.

Crime unit warns consumers to be aware of identity thieves

Thieves are always looking for a perfect scenario that will allow them to obtain identification information.

Because the holiday season is the time of year when most identity crime occurs, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security is offering tips to consumers to prevent identity theft this year.
Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America, and for the 12th consecutive year, topped the list of consumer complaints to the Federal Trade Commission.
A reported 18 percent of the more than two million complaints filed were related to identity theft.

Joint resolution continues

Spencer Board of Mayor and Aldermen came to order at 5:30 p.m., Nov. 6, 2013, and continued the discussion from the last Van Buren County Commission meeting.
The joint resolution with the city/county and TDOT for street maintenance on Drake and Shockley and Industry Drive was proposed. Greg Wilson explained the details.
“TDOT will be resurfacing from Industry Drive, right of Highway 111, to Drake and Shockley,” he said.
A concrete barrier would be removed, allowing for a turning lane. The motion had passed at the Van Buren County Commission meeting and was approved again by the council.

Sparta man facing robbery and assault charges

A Sparta man is facing several charges after officers say he threatened family members with a knife when they refused to give him $40.
According to a report by Sparta Police Officer Brent Copeland, at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Nov. 13, he responded to a home on Dogwood Street in response to an unwanted guest that reportedly made the residents feel “threatened.”
Officer Copeland reports that the homeowners were sitting at their table when a relative, James Daniel Poston allegedly came into the house demanding that they give him $40.

Cantrell selected to play in All Star game

All Star game selection. Warrior senior football player, Hunter Cantrell, has been selected as a member of the East squad in the Toyota East/West All Star game to be played at Tennessee Tech on Friday, December 13th.

Even though the season ended for the White County High School football team a few weeks ago, one Warrior senior will get the chance to prolong his high school career for one game next week.
Hunter Cantrell has been selected to play in the seventh annual Toyota East/West All Star Classic. The game will be played Friday, December 13th at Tennessee Tech’s Tucker Stadium.

Warriors roll by Livingston Academy, 65-41

The Warrior basketball team took advantage of their more experienced team and was able to roll to a 65-41 win over Livingston Academy (1-4) in Friday’s game at the Modern Woodmen Thanksgiving Classic.
Three players reached double figures for WCHS led by the 18 points of Kordell Henderson, who posted a double-double with his 13 rebounds. Cameron Bruce came off the bench and added 13 while Cade Crosland tallied 12, all from three point range.

Warriorettes fall to MLK on last second shot

After a week layoff and coming off Thanksgiving, the Warriorettes had trouble getting going Friday against Martin Luther King High School in the Modern Woodmen Thanksgiving Classic at Lebanon High School.
The Lady Royals controlled the tempo of the game and at the end, put in the last shot of the game to defeat the Warriorettes 42-40.
The two teams traded baskets four times in the final minute of the contest.

For the second time in as many games, the Warriorette basketball team didn’t give up a single three-point basket to their opponent, but then again, the Columbia Lady Lions pounded the ball down to the basket time and time again and handed WCHS their second straight loss of the Thanksgiving Classic.

WCHS wins battle of the Warriors in Lebanon

Two Warrior basketball teams squared off Saturday in the Modern Woodmen Classic in Lebanon on Saturday and the ones from Sparta came away with the victory.
The Warriors of White County High School held off a late rally by the Warriors of Riverdale High School (3-3) and finished with the 60-58 victory improving to 5-1 on the season.
