Warriorettes split pair of close ones in first two rounds

The Warriorette basketball team competed in a pair of thrillers in their opening two games of the 2013 Sonic Shootout.
On Thursday, the WCHS girls held off McMinn County for the 62-59 win on opening day, but then fell to Harpeth Hall on Friday 68-66.
A 27-point outburst by junior point guard, Bella Taylor, pushed the Warriorettes to Thursday’s win. Four Warriorettes scored in double figures in the loss to the Honeybears. WCHS had several chances in the final minute … CONTINUED


Clarkrange takes Sonic Shootout girls’ championship

Third place. The Warriorettes went 1-2 in the Sonic Shootout finishing third. They suffered losses to Clarkrange and Harpeth Hall, but defeated McMinn County.

This year, the girls’ side of the Sonic Shootout was round robin play with only four teams competing.
The format for the tournament would go by overall record and then point differential as a tiebreaker.
The Clarkrange Lady Buffalo came into Saturday night’s game with the Warriorettes at 2-0. The Warriorettes were 1-1 after splitting their first two games. Harpeth Hall had already finished at 2-1. Riverdale defeats Warriors in Shootout title game

Sonic Shootout runner-up. The Warriors finished second in the 6th annual Sonic Shootout losing in the finals to Riverdale 75-67 on Saturday.

Two out of the three losses the Warrior basketball team have suffered this season have come against teams they have already defeated.
Such was the case Saturday night at Roy Sewell Gymnasium when the Warriors of White County High School squared off against the Riverdale Warriors in the championship game of the Sonic Shootout.
The WCHS Warriors have appeared in five of the six title games of the event, but still only have won the tournament once.

45-year-old Sparta man killed in holiday crash at Highway 111 split

Bud Vines, 45, died in this single-vehicle crash some time between Christmas Eve and Christnas morning.

A Sparta man on his way to visit relatives for Christmas was found deceased at the Highway 111 and Highway 70 split early Christmas morning by Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers who say he had crashed sometime the evening before.
According to Sgt. Jimmy Jones, Bud Vines, 45, of Sparta, was traveling in a 1996 Dodge Dakota truck from the Chattanooga area on Highway 111 sometime on Dec. 24, 2013.
At the split of Highway 111 and Highway 70, Sgt. Jones says it appears Vines took the wrong ramp to head toward McMinnville.… CONTINUED


Richard Carl Garrett

Richard Carl Garrett, 73, of Van Buren County, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at the V.A. Hospital in Nashville.
Richard was born to Carl and Gertrude Garrett, of Overton County, on Sept. 11, 1940, in Battle Creek, Mich.
Richard graduated from Pennfield High School, in Battle Creek, Mich., in 1958. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Law Enforcement and Criminology from Eastern Kentucky University and his M.E.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of South Florida.
Richard, a Vietnam veteran, served with Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) 11 and 22, and SEAL TEAM ONE, and the 20th Special Forces Group.

Janet Marie Stephens Black, 75, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 26, 2013, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Ms. Black was born March 4, 1938, in Markle, Ind., to Solomon and Mary Crail Stephens.
She was a former factory worker and CNA.
She attended Family Harvest Church.
Ms. Black was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jack Stephens, Tommy Stephens; and daughter, Cammie Sue Collins.

Richard Allen Pope, 37, of Nashville, passed away Dec. 21, 2013, at Skyline Medical Center, in Nashville.
Mr. Pope was born Dec. 10, 1976.
Funeral service was 3 p.m., Dec. 27, 2013, at Greenwood Cemetery.

Thomas Elbert Taylor

Thomas Elbert Taylor, 92, passed away Dec. 24, 2013, at his daughter’s residence.
Mr. Taylor was born Nov. 19, 1921, n Bend, Ore., to Caroline Amelia Taylor and Thomas Elvert Hoech.
He was a World War II veteran where he served in the Merchant Marines.
A memorial service was 6 p.m., Dec. 27, 2013, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Bro. Bill Stebbins officiated.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


25-year-old killed in single-vehicle crash

For the second time this week, a single-vehicle crash has taken the life of a White County resident.
According to Sgt. Jimmy Jones of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, just after midnight on Dec. 28, Joshua P. Davis, age 25 of Young Ridge Road in western White County, was traveling in a 2006 Chrysler Sebring on Indian Mound Road, near the intersection of Pin Hook Road.
As he approached a curve in the road, he reportedly attempted to brake and skidded, but went straight into a large tree at 1172 Indian Mound Road.
Speed may have been a factor in the crash, troopers say, and tests are being conducted … CONTINUED

Eunice B. Thompson Cash, 86, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 25, 2013, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Cash was born Aug. 21, 1927, in the Hickory Valley community of White County, to Oliver B. Thompson and Lou Cinda Huff Thompson Smith.
In her early years, she also lived in the Blue Springs Community where she was an avid gardener. She loved to bake and sew and made most of her own clothes. She worked at the Sparta Shirt Factory and Doyle Shirt Factory. She showed love for her family and friends and attended the Robinson Chapel Presbyterian Church.

William Clyde Dodson, 78, of the Mooneyham community, passed away Dec. 24, 2013, at this home.
Mr. Dodson was born Oct. 19, 1935, to Arliss Clyde and Dollie May Cagle Dodson.
He was a faithful member of Mooneyham Free Will Baptist Church.
Mr. Dodson was preceded by his parents; son, W.C. Dodson, three sisters, Tobitha Thompson, Laura Neely, Flora Watson; and three brothers, Charles Dodson, Floyd Dodson and James Dodson.

Reba June Swindell, 75, passed away Dec. 25, 201,3 at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Ms. Swindell was born June 1, 1938, in White County, a daughter of Elizabeth Elsie Bumbalough and Willie Jay Scott.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Marty Slatten; grandson, Lee Slatten; and brother, Billy Joe “Jody” Scott.
