Bud L. Vines

Bud L. Vines, 45, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 25, 2013, in an automobile accident.
Mr. Vines was born July 28, 1968, in Joliette, Ill., a son of Jerry and Tennie Devereux McDowell, who now reside in Sparta.
He worked as a roofer in residential and commercial construction.
Survivors include his parents, Tennie and Jerry McDowell, of Sparta; sister, Audrey Taylor (Leslie), of Sparta; four brothers, Steve Devereux (Dana), of Sparta, Christopher Vines, of Sparta, Phillip Vines, of Sparta, Brian Vines, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three nieces, Victoria Devereux, of Sparta, and Amber Vines and Amy Vines, of Georgia.
No services are planned at this time.

Thomas Elbert Taylor

Thomas Elbert Taylor, 92, passed away Dec. 24, 2013, at his daughter’s residence.
Mr. Taylor was born Nov. 19, 1921, n Bend, Ore., to Caroline Amelia Taylor and Thomas Elvert Hoech.
He was a World War II veteran where he served in the Merchant Marines.
A memorial service was 6 p.m., Dec. 27, 2013, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Bro. Bill Stebbins officiated.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Alverson remembered for his kindness and anonymous generosity

When Carl “Apple Jack” Alverson returned from the Korean War, he said that he had been around the world and Sparta was the most beautiful place he had ever seen.
Alverson was born and raised less than a mile from the Sparta courthouse on Bronson Bend. He learned to wire electricity before he was 10 years old from his father when TVA came to White County in the 1930s. By the 1950s, he was an electrician. He wired Thomas Industries and Sparta Shopping Center, as well as many local schools, businesses and homes.

City moves forward with sewage rehab

Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen has given the go-ahead for the next step in the rehabilitation of the city’s sewer and wastewater system.
During a recent meeting, the board authorized solicitation of bids for Community Development Block Grant Sewer Improvements.
•Project A (sewage lift stations): Separate sealed bids for the construction of the project will be received by the City of Sparta until 9:30 a.m., Jan. 23, 2014. The scope of work will include three submersible sewage lift stations (Turntable Road, Mayberry Street and South Carter Street).

Veterans Cemetery Committee continues selection process

The Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery Steering Committee met on Dec. 13 at American Legion Post 207 in Spencer to discuss their ongoing efforts of selecting potential sites and funding for the new cemetery.
According to Chairman Jim Amerson, while the committee has not made progress on selecting locations that may be suitable for the cemetery, they have been looking at several parcels of land.
The plan is to select three possible sites, hopefully, Amerson says, by February. The next step will be to determine the suitability of the properties for cemetery purposes.

6th annual Sonic Shootout tips off today

Knocking it down. Kelsey Roberts and the Warriorettes will begin tournament play at 6 p.m. Thursday against McMinn County. The Warriorettes play each of the three nights at 6 p.m. The Warriors will be hosting an eight-team bracket from the 26th - 28th. WCHS begins tourney play against Shelbyville Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

For the next three days (Thursday-Saturday), Roy Sewell Gymnasium is the place to be for those who enjoy high school basketball.
The Warriors and Warriorettes are hosting the 6th annual Sonic Shootout with 12 teams representing 10 different high schools expected to compete. Games begin at noon each day and will be a total … CONTINUED


Overturned trailer closes Roberts Matthews Highway

The trailer on this tractor trailer overturned in the morning, spilling the lumber it was transporting onto Roberts Matthews Highway. The road was shut down for a few hours while Savage Lumber employees cleared the roadway.

A tractor-trailer making a delivery of lumber lost its load on Dec. 20 as it rounded a corner on Roberts Matthews Highway, shutting down the roadway for several hours.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Jimmy Jones, a 2012 Freightliner truck, driven by Gerald Allison, age 70, was traveling southbound on Roberts Matthews Highway from the Savage Lumber Mill in Sparta to the mill in Doyle.

Governor Haslam presents $500,000 to City of Spencer

Governor Bill Haslam visited to give the city of Spencer a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant. These funds will allow the city to upgrade the system, although they will not be expanding water lines. About $1.2 million in grants has been given to Spencer in the last year alone. Spencer is hoping to also receive a $225,000 Appalachian Rural Community grant. With this grant, the city would be able to get water to 18 homes in the area. – by Raela Gore


Joseph Fredrick Connell

Joseph Fredrick Connell, 73, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 15, 2013, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Connell was born May 30, 1940, in Boston, Mass., to Marion G. Scribner and Patrick F. Connell.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and had served as a police officer with Metro Nashville.
There will be a private family service at a later date.

Richard Earl Posekany

Richard Earl Posekany, 74, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 19, 2013, at St. Thomas Hospital, in Nashville.
Mr. Posekany was born June 13, 1939, in Walworth County, Wis., the son of Earl Posekany and Edith Pruefert Posekany.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Dale Posekany.
He is survived by wife of 30 years, Allie Posekany; sons, Kenneth Posekany, Stanley Gibbs; daughters, Judy Barnes, Roberta Burton, Sarah Gibbs; two grandchildren, Andi and Erica Burton; two great-grandchildren, Jasper and Ayla Burton; brother, Arlyn Posekany; and first wife and friend, Maxine Boyd.

Santa makes an early visit to White County Animal Shelter

On Dec. 18, 2013, Shelter Manager Stephanie Smith got to play Santa early for Jada, a sweet adoptable Pit Bull seen gently nibbling one of her treats. Jada received a pink Bark Avenue collar, treats, a big bone and a fluffy new bed to call her own. This gift and many other similar gifts for Santa to deliver were made possible by an anonymous donor. The shelter needs donations year-round. Robert Jarvis Prater

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Robert Jarvis Prater, 69, of Crossville, passed away Dec. 4, 2013, at Parkwest Medical Center, in Knoxville.
Mr. Prater was born on Feb. 20, 1944, in Sparta, to Robert Edgar and Ann Chittick Prater.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Prater was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ann Chittick Prater; aunt and uncle, Harry and Cecil Chittick; and brother-in-law, Rush Wicker.
Survivors include his son, Bobby Prater, of Cookeville; daughter, Stephanie Arnett, of Cookeville; grandchildren, Tyler Arnett, Sienna Prater, Leni Prater; and sisters, Kathy Haynes (Alan), Margaret Wicker.
