Lester Leon Cook, 1931-2014

Lester Leon Cook, 83, of Sparta, passed away June 28, 2014, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Cook was born April 15, 1931, in Bristol, Tennessee, the son of the John Cook and Mattie Fauver Cook.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kermit Cook; and a sister, Clara Craig.
Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Geiger and husband Dan, Susie Hagy, all of Bristol, Tennessee, Chevie Warren, of Sparta; son, John Lester Cook, of Cocoa, Florida; sisters, Christine Lory and husband Chuck, of McEwen, Dorcas Rosenbalm … CONTINUED


Sparta Electric power outage

Sparta Electric System customers will experience a power outage 2-4 a.m., Sunday, July 13. According to L.R. West, director of Sparta Electric System, the outage is for servicing a transformer. Please pass this information on to anyone who may be affected by this outage.


Meth found at THP mobile truck inspection

On June 26 Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers brought their state-of-the-art mobile truck inspection station back to White County to ensure commercial vehicles were traveling safely on White County roads.
A report by Sgt. Kent Norris said a total of 32 inspections were conducted. In one tractor-trailer, he stated, troopers discovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
The individual operating this truck, Verlon Keith Bobbitt, of Smithville, was arrested and transported to White County Justice Center.

Minnie Maurine Martin Marcus

Minnie Maurine Martin Marcus age 78 of Sparta passed away Saturday morning June 28, 2014 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Ms. Marcus was born Aug. 18, 1935, in Putnam County, to Collie Omage Martin and Bertie Elrod Martin.
She was a photographer.
Ms. Marcus was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Nathan Golden; stepmother Odell Martin; and brothers, Albert Omage Martin and Vernon Martin.

182 new laws are effective July 1

Tennesseans will see almost 200 new laws on the books beginning July 1, 2014, that range from the enforcement of drugs to enacting additional legislation about education.
Some of the new laws that may be of general interest to the public are:
HB1370: Arrests – As enacted, revises provisions governing issuance of arrest warrant and summons in lieu of arrest warrant. – Amends TCA Title 40, Chapter 6.
HB1759: DUI Offenses – As enacted, enacts “Amelia’s Law”, which clarifies that a transdermal monitoring device or other alternative alcohol or drug monitoring device may be ordered as a condition of pretrial diversion, parole, probation, judicial diversion or DUI probation … CONTINUED


Mary Lou Phifer Duke

Mary Lou Phifer Duke, 70, of Doyle, passed away June 28, 2014, at Highlands Medical Center.
Mrs. Duke was born Sept. 21, 1943, in Akron, Ohio, Clarence Lee Phifer and Wilda Helen Owens Phifer.
She dedicated her life to her husband, family and faith. She was a member of Quebeck Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Mrs. Duke was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Owen Lee Phifer; and a sister Carol Authenreth.

Sweeps Portland in state qualifier

The Sparta Senior Girls’ softball All Star team (aka X-Treme Impact) had little trouble dispatching of visiting Portland Saturday at the sports complex located on the Smithville Highway.

The Impact won two straight to capture the district title and a berth in the Little League Senior Girls State tournament.

With only two teams in this district that still compete in the Little League organization; Sparta met up against Portland for a two-best-of-three series. Sparta made quick work of the visitors in two games (21-5, 19-0) leaving no need for a third game.

After dropping an extra inning heartbreaker in their opener on Friday in Lebanon, the Sparta 8 and under baseball All Stars bounced back with a big win on Saturday to even their pool play worksheet at 1-1 with three games remaining.
