White County Girl Scouts receive highest honors

More than 275 Girl Scouts and volunteers were honored at the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee’s Salute to Outstanding Leadership Awards ceremony last month. The ceremony took place at Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena and Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee Alumna Sarah Lankford was the featured speaker.
During the ceremony, 58 Girl Scouts from throughout Middle Tennessee received the Gold Award (the highest achievement in Girl Scouting), 117 Girl Scouts received the Silver Award, 106 Girl Scouts received the Stellar Seller award and 12 adult volunteers were honored.

Cheering on their team at the next level

Headed off in separate directions. Two of the recently graduated WCHS senior cheerleaders will be cheering in college, but at different schools. Lindsey McCulley (left) will head to Carson Newman while Terrie Shea Taylor (right) will be at Tusculum. They are joined in the picture by their high school coach, Angela McCulley.

The White County High School Class of 2014 has had numerous players decide to continue their careers at the next level in their respective sports.
As the school year came to an end, two of the senior WCHS cheerleaders also decided to join and accepted scholarships to cheer in college.

Putnam County outreach event resource fair

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s mobile Career Coach will be at Putnam County Community Advisory Board (C.A.B.) located at 701 County Services Dr., 10 a.m.-2 p.m., June 13. Betty Joe Norris Cole, 75, of Sparta, passed away June 10, 2014, at Centennial Medical Center, in Nashville.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Sparta’s first annual Rev-n-Ride for Wounded Warriors to be held June 21

The first annual Geekbox Rock-n-Rev Ride will be held on June 21 to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The motorcycle race begins at the Turney Financial Group, LLC office at 8 a.m. The cost will be $30 per rider and $10 per passenger. The race will end at Scott Turney’s farm for a catered barbeque lunch with a raffle and event t-shirts. Register at Turney Financial Group, LLC or Comupgeeks.

Cool off this summer at the Sparta YMCA

The YMCA pool offers open swim time, swimming lessons for both advanced swimmers and beginners. Morning and evening classes for both advanced swimmers and beginners are offered. Rates are $30 for members and $45 for non-members.

Currently, the YMCA is offering a Summer Special– $99 for the entire household from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Contact the Sparta YMCA for more information at (931) 836-3330 or drop by to sign up.

State Fair issues call for entries

The Tennessee State Fair is seeking the best of the best that the Volunteer State has to offer.

State Fair officials are determined to find the best Tennessee two-crust apple pie, the most meticulously cured and delicious country ham, the most precious hand made quilt, the largest watermelon, the state’s most prized dairy cow and the very best of literally scores of other cultivated, handcrafted, self-produced and personally created food items, works of art, farm animals and agricultural products.

And best of all the rewards for these outstanding achievements, besides having the bragging rights of being the state’s best, now total almost $150,000 in cash prizes.
