Methodist Laity meeting

White County United Methodist Laity meeting will be Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church, in Sparta. Dinner is $5 and will be served at 6:30 p.m. Program will be presented by Mountain T.O.P.


Josh Peterson Jr.

Josh Peterson Jr., 80, of Spencer, passed away June 26, 2014, at his residence in Spencer.

Mr. Peterson was born Nov. 6, 1933, in Bakersville, North Carolina, to Joshua Peterson Sr. and the late Eva McCourry Peterson.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Reba Roberts Peterson; brothers, Buster Amos Peterson, Charles Peterson, Bill Peterson, Clark Peterson; and sister, Emma Lou Laberyie.

Olivia Miller wins at All-American Soap Box Derby

Olivia Miller, of Sparta, recently won first place in the Stock Car Division of the 12th annual First Energy All-American Soap

Box Derby, on June 21, 2014, at Tennessee Tech, in Cookeville.

The win awards Olivia a spot in the All-American Soap Box Derby Race in Akron, Ohio, in July.

The Akron race will include children from across the United States and several countries. Also participating in the local race was Alexandria Miller, of Sparta who won fifth place in the Super Stock Division.

GasBuddy surveys fuel additives

Do fuel additives really work? In a GasBuddy survey, nearly 8,500 respondents doubted how well fuel additives worked in their experience, while 10,000 said they don’t use such additives.

The results indicate a mixed bag, with 56 percent, or 4,717 responses, responding that fuel additives made no difference in their experience. 18 percent or 1,510 respondents said they experienced varied results, while 2 percent or 189 said they thought the additives made their car run worse than it was before they used the fuel additives.

That leaves just under a quarter of respondents users happy using fuel additives, or 24 percent – some 2,076 motorists – saying they


July 4th celebration

There will be a July 4th celebration beginning at 7 p.m., at 6760 Smithville Highway. The event is sponsored by B.J. Starnes and White County elected officials/candidates (Martha Bumbalough, B.K. Luna, Brenda Officer, Oddie Shoupe, Phyllis Humphrey, Tina Miller, Clay Parker, Herd Sullivan and Beverly Templeton). The event will include free fireworks and music. Food will be available on-site to purchase. Donations of any amount to Cassville Volunteer Fire Department will be greatly appreciated. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the evening.
