Two job fairs in two days at Goodwill Career Solutions Center in Cookeville

Looking for work? We know who’s hiring. The Goodwill Career Solutions center in Cookeville will host two job fairs next week for two employers looking to fill several positions.
The first job fair will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., June 9, for D.P. Personnel, at Career Solutions, 565-C S. Jefferson Ave., in Cookeville. The company is looking to fill several positions in Sparta. Openings include machinists, assembly workers, material handlers, quality inspectors, sorters and welders. These positions pay up to $10 an hour.

Fatality reported in crash

Sparta Police, Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, Sparta Fire Department and White County EMS responded to a traffic crash on Churchill Drive at approximately 6 p.m. on June 2, that rescue workers described as a single-vehicle head-on collision with a tree. The rescue squad performed an extrication, however the female, whose name has not been released at this time, reportedly passed away.


Mobile Food Pantry

Another Mobile Food Pantry from Second Harvest Food Bank of Nashville will be 10 a.m., June 6, at the pavilion in Pearson Park, which is adjacent to Sparta Civic Center. Clients are asked to park in East Sparta Church of God parking lot, and they will be directed to the pavilion. For more information call (931) 836-3696.


TSBDC at TTU hosts seminar for entrepreneurs June 19

There are a lot of things to know about starting a business. The Tennessee Small Business Development Center at Tennessee Tech University will host a seminar June 19 to help would-be entrepreneurs.
The seminar, So, You Want to Start a Business, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19, in TTU’s Johnson 401. TSBDC assistant director John Woodard will lead the seminar and discuss topics including business structures, challenges, planning and finances.

Wayne Stewart

Wayne Stewart, 72, of Cookeville, TN, passed away May 31, 2014, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Stewart was born Oct. 27, 1941, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Claude and Vera Stewart. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran.
He was well known and well loved in Sparta for his devotion to Sparta-White County Senior Center and for his dancing expertise. He had taught line dance classes at the center every Monday.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dezzie Mae Stewart.

Pamela Ann Dearing

Pamela Ann Dearing, 43, passed away May 31, 2014, at her home.
Miss Dearing was born Nov. 6, 1970, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Maurice Eugene Dearing and Joyce Ann Rice Dearing.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include her mother, Joyce Ann Rice Dearing, of Sparta; twin sister, Carol Ann Dearing, of Sparta; sister, Melissa Taylor and husband Lyle, of Sparta; brother, Dennis Morgan and wife Elaine, of Virginia; three nieces; two nephews; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral service was 4 p.m., June 1, 2014, at Thurman Funeral Home, with burial in Black Oak Cemetery. Bro. Perry Hartman will officiate.

Johnny Lee Young, 66, of Sparta, passed away May 30, 2014, at his residence.
Mr. Young was born Oct. 6, 1947, in White County to Dibrell Lee Young and Daisy Belle Jones Young.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Cecil Young.

Lois Lenore Megenhardt Brock

Lois Lenore Magenhardt Brock, 88, of Sparta, passed away May 29, 2014, at home with family by her side.
Mrs. Brock was born June 9, 1925, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to Otto and Vivian Freed Megenhardt.
A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was renowned for her cooking. She enjoyed working puzzles. During World War II she was a Rosie Riveter, working in a war plant in Ohio. She retired to Sparta in 1983.
Mrs. Brock was a member of Heavenly Host Lutheran Church.

Jo Ann Parker Weber, 80, of Sparta, passed away May 31, 2014, at her home.
Mrs. Weber was born Dec. 19, 1933, in Decatur, Ala, the twin daughter of Charles P. Parker and Jane M. Parker.
She was a graduate “cum laude” of Birmingham Southern College and a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Mrs. Weber retired as a probate court register from the County of Oakland, Michigan. In addition, she had taught high school English in Alabama and Ohio, as well as worked as associate director of the Methodist Wesley Foundation at the University of Oklahoma, where she met George Weber, her future husband of 54 … CONTINUED

Raymond Estil Hicks, 67, of Sparta, passed away May 31, 2014, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mr. Hicks was born May 23, 1947, in Monticello, Kentucky, the son Elza Hicks and Hattie Harness Hicks.
He loved to fish and play poker.

RCB Trucking team takes on DBT at Doyle ballfield

RCB’s Catcher “Down Town Brown” aka Ronnie Brown, guards home plate anticipating a runner. RCB Trucking led the game. DBT tied them up in the last inning 19-19. Gary Peterson hit one over the fence winning the game for DBT. Final Score DBT leading 20-19.

Doyle’s Softball first season wraps up with the tournaments starting on June 13 and 14, 2014
The second season starts July 8, 2014. It is a 16-game season and a double-three elimination tournament. There will be a co-ed league forming with an eight-game season and a double elimination tournament.
