Herbert Dale Graham

Herbert Dale Graham, 61, passed away June 26, 2014, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.

Mr. Graham was born March 1, 1953, in White County, to Willie Mae Gilliam Graham and Joe Gaines Graham.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Gaines Graham, and two brothers, Joe Thomas Graham and Ben Graham.

Survivors include his wife, Collette Graham; daughter, Angie Dale Palmer and husband Jim Palmer; mother, Willie Mae Graham Goodwin; brother, Fred Graham and wife Phyllis; sister, Joyce Holland; two grandsons, Hunter and Seth Price; and special friend, Maggie.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., June 27, 2014, at Board Valley Free Will Baptist Church, … CONTINUED

TBI gives update on Shoemaker case

According to information released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, an autopsy determined that John Howard Shoemaker III, whose body was discovered on April 10 behind My Place Bar, died as a result of multiple blunt force trauma. Joe Daniel Honaker Jr., Jared Dewayne Holmes and Bart Kirby were arrested yesterday and charged with second degree murder and aggravated assault leading to the death of another.


THP conducting truck inspections

Have you seen the Tennessee Highway Patrol on Highway 111 today? THP troopers are conducting inspections on trucks that are driving through White County to ensure they are traveling safely. Methamphetamine has reportedly been located in one truck and another truck was removed from service for allegedly traveling without brakes, along with bolts and screws falling out of the axles.


Three men charged in Shoemaker murder

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and White County Sheriff Department, in a joint effort, arrested Jared Dewayne Holmes, Joe Daniel Honaker Jr. and Bart Kirby, on June 25 for the April 5, 2014, murder of John Howard Shoemaker III.
According to case agent Detective Chris Isom, of White County Sheriff Department, Shoemaker, 36, of Sparta, was reported missing, on April 7, and his remains were discovered, on April 10, behind My Place Bar in the Doe Creek dry bank area on Bon Air Mountain.

Voters will face tough decisions in Aug. 7 election

An election of the magnitude that will be witnessed on Aug. 7, 2014, is an event that only occurs every eight years and may prove to be a day of decision-making where voters could keep things status quo or choose new faces for the numerous positions on the ballot.
According to documentation from White County Election Commission office, there are 93 candidates on the ballot who are vying for a multitude of offices.

Daughters and family remember the ways in which one woman touched their lives

When Lois Lenore Megenhardt Brock passed away on May 29, 2014, she left behind countless hearts missing her warm presence.
“She was the heart of the family,” Lois’s daughter, Diane Slater, said. “She always put everyone before herself; it was so evident,”
Originally from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Lois married James Brock and eventually settled in Tennessee.  Lois and James    married once he returned home after serving in World War II.  During the war, Lois was a Rosie Riveter and worked in a plant making wings for dummy airplanes used to fool the enemy troops.

Spencer and Van Buren combine efforts for incoming business

At the June 17, 2014 Van Buren County Commission Meeting, City Mayor Greg Wilson addressed the board about the job opportunities available with the addition of Sunkote to Van Buren County.
When the business owner wanted an expansion to the building the location’s owners did not want to undertake, the business owner considered taking the business and jobs that come with it to Warren County or Putnam County.
The Industrial Board of Van Buren County lost its charter in fiscal year 2005—2006 and is still in administrative dissolution.

One transported by Life Flight in Highway 111 crash

A two-vehicle crash that occurred on the evening of June 22 injured three and sent one to Vanderbilt University Medical Center by Life Flight.
According to Capt. R.C. Christian, of Tennessee Highway Patrol,  Stanley P. Wain, of Spencer, was traveling south on Highway 111 in a 2007 Hyundai.
Mitchell A. Lautigar and his passenger Jody Lautigar were traveling north on Highway 111 in a 2011 Honda.
The vehicles reportedly collided head-on in the construction area.
Jody Lautigar was trapped in the vehicle for approximately two hours, according to Christian, and was extricated by Piney Fire Department. He was then transported by Life Flight medical helicopter to Vanderbilt.

James and Lois Brock were together more than 66 years.

A crash on June 22 in northern Van Buren County on Highway 111 injured three individuals. One was sent by Life Flight to Vanderbilt after reportedly being pinned in the vehicle for two hours.
