Library to host computer classes this fall

The White County Public Library will be holding computer training classes, ranging from first-time computer users learning the basics to utilizing computers for everyday needs, such as applying for government services or planning vacations.

Classes begin August 15, 2014 and conclude November 14, 2014.  Carmilla Cocke will be leading the classes.

Basic Computer Overview:  Learn how to use a mouse, the computer, and have an introduction to the internet.

Willie Mae Cope

Willie Mae Cope, 91, of Spencer, passed away July 30, 2014, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Cope was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Spencer, the daughter of Montie Bouldin and Haley Clendenon Bouldin.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Aug. 2, 2014, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Shockley Cemetery. The family will receive friends 3-9 p.m., Aug. 1, at the funeral home.

Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Timothy Sherrell, 51, of Sparta, passed away Wednesday, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Tennessee Tax-Free Weekend is Aug. 1-3

To make going back to school a little easier, Tennessee shoppers can buy certain items without paying sales tax before the school year kicks off.
From August 1-3, the sales tax holiday will allow shoppers to purchase clothing, school supplies, and art supplies that cost less than $100 without paying state or local sales tax.  Additionally, computers that cost $1,500 or less will be included.
The holiday begins Friday, August 1 at 12:01 a.m. and ends Sunday, August 3 at 11:59 p.m.
Clothing such as shirts, dresses, pants, coats, gloves, hats, hosiery, neckties, belts, sneakers, shoes, uniforms, and scarves will be eligible.

Trick-or-treaters celebrate Halloween in July

To fill the typically slow month of July with activities for the residents, NHC annually throws Julyoween, a celebration of Halloween in July.  The staff chose to fill the gap with one of the residents’ favorite holidays, inviting families dressed for the occasion to trick-or-treat with the residents.  NHC resident Jeanne Franklin gives candy to trick-or-treaters Jared and Emilee Ake. Unemployment rate continues to increase

The unemployment rate has continued to climb in White County, possibly as the result of the closing of Kroger and Family Dollar.
White County’s unemployment rate spiked from 8.4 percent in May 2014 to the 9.1 percent in June 2014, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor.  White County’s rate has been on the rise since May 2014; before, White County’s unemployment rate had been slowly declining.
The year started off with a 9.4 percent unemployment rate in White County in January 2014.  February 2014 experienced a slight increase to 9.5 percent, but March 2014 showed a significant decrease to 8.9 percent.  April experienced the last figure decrease … CONTINUED

Lillie Faye Brady Miller

Lillie Faye Brady Miller, 67, of Sparta, passed away July 29, 2014, at her home.

Mrs. Miller was born Dec. 26, 1946, in White County, to Square Emmitt and Cora Ellen Kelsey Brady.

She was a retired factory worker.

Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Clata Parrish.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Fred Miller; son, Randy Miller and Shannon Lewis; daughter, Teresa and husband Lee Quinton; grandchildren, Josh Miller and Sally Torres, Zach Miller, Lauren Miller, Breeann Lewis, Hunter Young, Julie Torres, Lincoln Torres; brother, Roy Brady and wife Jackie; two sisters, Ethel Young and husband Robert, Brenda … CONTINUED

Warriors wrapping up week with three-way scrimmage

With weather that makes the going a lot smoother, the Warrior football team commenced their official practice Monday.

The pads went on and the hitting actually began in the wee morning hours of Monday. Just after the storms in the county had subsided, the Warrior football team brought even more electricity to the air as they opened official practice with Midnight Madness.

Weather forced the team inside the fitness facility onto the artificial turf, but that did not make things any less exciting. The team got in their first official hitting drills of the season in front of a large crowd … CONTINUED

Golf teams fall at Bear Trace

Second match of the season

The White County High School golf teams traveled to Crossville Tuesday for their second match of the season, which was a three-way District 6AAA outing.

In addition to the White County High School teams, Stone Memorial and Warren County were also in action at the always-tough Bear Trace course.

Warren County came out on top of both the boys’ and girls’ matches on the picturesque afternoon. The Warriorettes did come in second in their match defeating Stone Memorial. The Warriors, however, were defeated by the Panthers as well as the Pioneers.

QB Club BBQ & Auction set for this Saturday

White County High School football season is just around the corner and even closer than that is the annual Quarterback Club Barbecue and Auction.

The event, which is the main fundraiser for the Warrior gridiron gang, is this Saturday, August 2nd, in the WCHS cafeteria.

The barbecue dinner begins at 5 p.m. Tickets for that are $10 per person. The auction is slated to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. For those interested in attending just the auction, admittance is free of charge.
