Community’s firefighters to benefit from new fundraising campaign

Tennessee Firemen’s Association has announced a new fundraising campaign, utilizing a specially-designed Geekbox wireless speaker, to help support the families of fallen firefighters, assist firefighters across the state with much-needed training, and help keep the Tennessee Fallen Firefighter Memorial going. A 70-year resident remembers Sparta after World War II

Etna Haston, a resident at Life Care Center of Sparta, has called White County home for approximately 70 years. Over the years, Haston has seen Sparta change in many ways and has vivid memories of the town’s history.

“When I first came here, there was no place to trade,” she said. “A stick in the road was about all it was. You had to go to Nashville to get clothing. People had to get on a bus and ride to Nashville to pick up an outfit.”

Elks Lodge dinner

Elks Lodge 2863 will host a rotisserie chicken dinner 5:30-7:30 p.m., Aug. 9, at the lodge, 4424 Old Kentucky Rd., in Sparta. The meal will include a quarter of rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll, drink and dessert, $8. For more information call (931) 858-0930.

Warriorette golfers turn in career-best rounds

Johnson shoots 5-under

The White County High School girls’ golf team turned in a career best round on a beautiful Monday afternoon at the Sparta Country Club.

Even though all three Warriorette golfers shot their career best rounds, they still came up one stroke short as a team and fell to Warren County. They did, however, defeat Cookeville.

Rising senior golfer, Shelby Johnson, shot a phenomenal 5-under 31 to lead the field on the day.

However, all three Warren County golfers came in under par giving the Lady Pioneers the victory on the day.

Beverly Ann Engel Gray

Beverly Ann Engel Gray, 64 of Sparta, formerly of Greenville, Tennessee, passed away Aug. 2, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Gray was born Feb. 5, 1950, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Merald and Dorothy Gadek Engel.

She was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bobby” Gray, and brother Donald Engel.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey Mace and wife Melissia, of Holly Hills, Florida, Timothy Mace and wife Sandra, of Sparta; grandchildren, DeWayne Mace, Christina Randolph, Jerrica Swift, Cameron Mace, Vannessa Young; stepdaughter, Wendy Gray; and brothers and sisters, Dorothy, Robert, Norma, Betty, … CONTINUED

Robert Lynn Crosslin

Robert Lynn Crosslin, 85, of Sparta, went home to be with the Lord, on Aug. 3, 2014, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Crosslin Dunham and husband James R. Dunham, of McMinnville, Becky Crosslin Stein, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and grandson, Scott Dunham, of Nashville.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m., Aug. 6, 2014, at Central Church of Christ, with burial in Old Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., Aug. 5, and 2-3 p.m., Aug. 6, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, White County Public Library, McMinnville First United Methodist Church or Central … CONTINUED

Rotary Club of Sparta Veterans’ Park project is underway

Construction for the Rotary Club of Sparta’s Veterans’ Park continued today as dirt was moved for the project.  Members of the community were able to donate benches, flag poles, planters, and engravings to honor veterans and their families.

Hardee’s remodeling continues

Robert Lynn Crosslin, 85, of Sparta, passed away Sunday, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Firefighters battle blaze on Crossville Highway

According to BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Thomas Steele, on August 2, BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department along with the assistance of Eastland Volunteer Fire Department, Sparta Fire Department, and Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department, White County Emergency Medical Services, and White County Sheriff Department, responded to a structure fire in the 9500 block of Crossville Highway. The structure was heavily involved on arrival of emergency personnel and was a total loss, Steele says. Photo submitted by Kim Pruitt.
