David Kevin Harden

David Kevin Harden, 54 of Sparta, passed away Sept, 12, 2014, at his residence.

Mr. Harden was born May 5, 1960, in Nashville, Tennessee.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a factory worker and avid music fan. When he went to concerts he would not just listen to the band, he would meet the band.

Mr. Harden is preceded in death by his adopted father, Robert Harden, and stepfather Harold Kolbe.

Survivors include his two daughters, Jessica Harden, of Sparta, Tiffini Linger and husband Steve, of Cookeville; stepson, Noah Linger; mother, Joyce Harden, of Sparta; father, Ron Hayson, of Monterey, Virginia; sister, Rhonda Harden, of Sparta; … CONTINUED

This month, Mayor Jeff Young and County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson are encouraging White County to get out and vote.  Registration to vote in the November 4 election ends October 6.  To register to vote, visit the White County Election Commission at the courthouse.


Bryant-Howard Family Reunion

The Bryant-Howard family is holding a reunion on Sat., Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. at Sparta Civic Center.  There will be a covered dish lunch and they ask that you bring your favorite photos to share.


Job fair until 2 p.m. today

Until 2 p.m. today, a job fair will be held at the Sparta UCHRA office.  Representatives from several hiring businesses are present.  Help with résumés is also available.


Sparta PD respond to Highway 111 crash

Sparta Police were on the scene of a traffic crash on Highway 111 near the Taft Church intersection at approximately 10:30 this morning. A car hit the back of a tractor-trailer, but there were reportedly no injuries in the collision.


MasterFest set for Sept. 26

At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 26 at Clarion Inn in Cookeville, the annual MasterFest fundraiser will be held to raise money for MasterSingers.  This year, live and silent auctions will be held.  Heavy appetizers, wine, beer, and soft drinks will be served.  MasterSingers will be present to sing.  Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door.  A table at the front may be purchased for $210.  Tickets may be purchased from MasterSingers members or on the website: http://www.mastersingersinc.com/Pages/WillowPlace.aspx


County mowing

There are mowers out on the county roads today, mowing along the roadways. Expect delays if traveling anywhere today. The mowers on Fred Hill Road blocked both lanes of traffic this morning.


Million Dollar Mile Yard Sale set for Oct. 4

Make plans to come to Sparta, Tennessee, on Oct. 4, 2014, from daylight until dark for the town-wide “Million Dollar Mile Yard Sale.” The event takes place through Sparta, on Highway 70 East (Bockman Way), just off Highway 111, and extend up North Spring Street. We invite visitors to discover the great vintage antique shops, family restaurants and Southern hospitality this area has to offer. Many set-up areas are available, some of which will be around the courthouse. The Farmers’ Market will also be open. The 14th annual Taste of Home Cooking School returns to Sparta with lots of fun and prizes in store. Before the show begins at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, there will be many vendor booths to browse. Tickets are once again $35 for premium reserved seating and $12 for general admission. Doors open at 4 p.m. for reserved seating ticketholders and at 5 p.m. for general admission tickets. The show will be held at White County Agriculture Complex, 564 Hale St., in Sparta. Page to speak at Republican meeting

White County Conservative Republicans would like to invite you to hear Wendy Page at their monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Sept. 22, 2014, on the third floor of the courthouse. Page is a homemaker from Greenbrier who home schools her six children. She is also an advocate for life and will be informing us on Amendment 1 that will be on the November ballot. Everyone is invited.
