Zelda Faye Jackson

Zelda Faye Jackson, 73, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 1, 2014, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

She was born Feb. 27, 1941, in Sparta, to John Golden and Bessie Hall Golden.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m., Oct. 10, at Highland Cemetery.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rescue Squad announces annual portrait fundraising drive

Sparta-White County Rescue Squad has begun their annual fundraising drive to purchase much needed equipment. The drive accounts for 60% of the Departments operating budget. When an emergency situation arises, time is of the essence. The Rescue Squad provides the reaction time necessary to save a life and rescue victims in rural communities. In order to cover the county in the most efficient and cost effective manner, the Rescue Squad has contracted with TramCam Enterprises to manage the fundraising drive.  David Jones is the ONLY authorized solicitor for the Rescue Squad, and he will have official photo ID badge and documentation to show that he is representing the CONTINUED

Doyle Fire Department receives new heat sensor camera

Doyle Volunteer Fire Department received a grant in July for $100,000 to purchase new equipment, and the first of that equipment has arrived. Chief Jason Sparks brought the new heat sensor camera to the Oct. 7 meeting of the Doyle Board of Mayor and Aldermen to explain how it works.

Miss Fabulous Pageant in need of dresses

Latest Spartan Award winners named

The WCHS football coaches have announced the winners of the Spartan Awards for the week of the Cumberland County game.

The two winners of the performance awards are Allen Newport and Malik Murray.

Newport, a senior, earned the honor for last week because, according to the coaches, he is having to play so many positions and take on so many different roles for the team especially with all the injuries. He also caught the game-winning touchdown pass in Friday’s win over the Jets.

Taste of Home Cooking School set for Oct. 14

The 14th annual Taste of Home Cooking School returns to Sparta with lots of fun and prizes in store. Tickets are once again $35 for premium reserved seating and $12 for general admission. Doors open at 4 p.m. for reserved seating ticketholders and at 5 p.m. for general admission tickets. The show will be held at White County Agriculture Complex, 564 Hale St., in Sparta. Geneva Pearl Thompson Spitzer

Geneva Pearl Thompson Spitzer, 88, passed away Oct. 3, 2014, at Desert Flower Memory Care Center, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Mrs. Spitzer was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Sparta, to William Cleveland Thompson and Ollie Laurntine Thurman Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Hubert Thompson, Herbert Thompson; and three sisters, Nettye Howard, Jesse Lowery and Alvesta Woodall.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Spitzer, of Chicago, Illinois; two sons, Kim (Kristy) Davenport, of Arizona, Kris Davenport, of Arizona; two stepsons, Jim (Roberta) Spitzer, of Chicago, Illinois, Mike (Karen) Spitzer, of Indianapolis, Indiana; sister, Jo Dickey, of Columbia, South Carolina; and four grandchildren, Heather Beauchamp, Rachel … CONTINUED

This Day in History

On this day in history, Oct. 8, 1918, Cpl. Alvin C. York and 16 other soldiers were dispatched before sunrise to take command of the Decauville railroad behind Hill 223 in the Chatel-Chehery sector of the Meuse-Argonne sector. The 17 men mistakenly wound up behind enemy lines. A brief fire-fight ensued, which resulted in the surrender of a superior German force to the 17 soldiers.  After ordering the German soldiers to lie down, the machine gun opened fire, killing several of the American soldiers. When all was said and done, nine men had captured 132 prisoners.




WCMS wraps up regular season with another win

The White County Middle School football team held off Warren County for the 30-28 win on Tuesday.

That gives WCMS a perfect regular season for the first time since 2004.  They will host Harris Middle Saturday at noon in the CTC Bowl game.

The White County High School soccer team sent their seniors out in style with a 6-0 win over Macon County Tuesday on senior night.

The Warriorettes wrap up the regular season with a trip to Livingston on Thursday.

Volleyball season comes to an end

The Warriorette volleyball team saw their season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Rhea County in the District 6AAA semifinals.
WCHS won the first game, but the Lady Eagles responded with three straight wins to earn a spot in the championsip game and the berth in the region.
The Warriorettes finish their season at 20-12.

Allie A. Cantrell, 95, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 7, 2014,a t Life Care Center of Sparta.
