Gas prices update

March 2– Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 6.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.18/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has increased 12.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.42/g, according to gasoline price website The national average has increased 37.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 103.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

•Donald Hughes Bradley was named White County High School class of 1975 valedictorian. Janie Marcum was salutatorian.
•Brenda Kay Newman was named valedictorian of the WCHS class of 1985. Brian Thomas Henry was Salutatorian.
•County Commissioners discussed the prospect of purchasing land adjacent to the fairgrounds for $6,500.
•Seth Daniels was number eight and Scarlett Slatton was number seven in the White County High School Top Ten graduating seniors.

TTU Craft Center offers Second Saturday workshops

The Appalachian Center for Craft at Tennessee Tech University will open its doors and studios to children and adults for its monthly Second Saturday event on March 14.  Both workshops cost $75 for materials and equipment and take place 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Advance registration is required; visit Children of all ages can learn to make clay pots in the free Craft Academy, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Registration is not required. Watoto Children’s Choir

The Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda will be the special guests at North Sparta Church of God, at 7 p.m., April 5, at North Sparta Church of God, 335 N. Spring St., in Sparta.  Amazing uplifting and energetic singing, dancing and message. This is a great opportunity for the community to learn about the orphans and widows in Uganda and how to reach out and help. Last year the building was packed out with those who came to enjoy the vibrant musical presentation.

Samuel “Sam” Jefferson Haston

Samuel “Sam” Jefferson Haston, 86, of Sparta, passed Feb. 28, 2015, at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Mr. Haston was born May 1, 1928, the youngest child of John J. Haston and Martha Evalee Gamble Haston.

He grew up in Van Buren County, in the Cane Creek Community.

Mr. Haston served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II. Afterward, he was married to his sweetheart, Morette Jean Bennett Haston, on Aug. 11, 1952. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Sectional games in Sparta and Spencer this week

Things are flying pretty high at both White County and Van Buren County High Schools Sunday.  All four basketball teams captured region titles and will four will get to host sectional games, which means the teams are one win away from the TSSAA State tournament.

The Warriorettes and Eaglettes will host their sectional games Monday at 7 p.m.

The WCHS girls (29-3) will host Oakland (25-7), a former District 7AAA foe at Roy Sewell Gymnasium.  WCHS won the Region 3AAA title by defeating Cumberland County 56-49.  It was the first region title for the Warriorettes since 1997.

Frances Price Johns

Frances Johns was born to Arle and Cary Ball Price, in Englewood, Tennessee.

She was a member of West Sparta Church of Christ.

Mrs. Johns was a retired registered dietitian. Her career covered working for the Veterans Administration, in Murfreesboro, to consulting for hospitals in Davidson, DeKalb, Grundy and Warren counties. The last 27 years prior to retirement were spent as the head dietitian for River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.

Mrs. Johns was a long-time resident of the Cummingsville Community, in Van Buren County.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Johna Johns; sisters, Christen Wilson and Delores Masengil; and brothers, J.B. Price and Hugh Price.


John Harry Messinger

John Harry Messinger, 75, of Quebeck, passed Feb. 24, 2015, at Erlanger Hospital, in Chattanooga.

Mr. Messinger was born July 30, 1939, in Reno, Nevada, to Leo Messinger and Rowena Pettit Messinger.

He was preceded in death by parents and his twin brother, Joseph Leo Messinger.

He was a Mason and a Shriner in Macon, Georgia.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Patricia Messinger, of Quebeck; daughter, T.J. Yarbrough and husband Bob, of Sylvania, Alabama; three sons, John Messinger, of Chattanooga, Bruce Payne, of Signal Mountain, John Harry Messinger Jr. ,of Macon, Georgia; stepson, Rickey Doyle Brooks Jr. and wife Stacy, of Dublin, Georgia; sister, Jhone Teresa … CONTINUED

Randall Stephen “Randy” Wilson

Randall Stephen “Randy” Wilson, 47, of Sparta, passed Feb. 25, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Wilson was born Sept. 1, 1967, in Cookeville, the son of the Rev. David Wilson and Juanita “Nita” Randolph Wilson.
