Daughters of Confederacy attend district meeting

UCHRA commodities distribution

Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency will hold a commodities distribution for White County, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 7, 2015, at the White County Ag Building of the fairgrounds, 565 Hale Street, in Sparta. Everyone must present a valid UCHRA commodity card in order to receive commodities. To sign up or reprint lost commodities cards contact your local UCHRA office. Dances at Cookeville Senior Center

On Thursday, April 30, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Southern Express, a country music band with sax, plays at Cookeville Senior Center, 186 S. Walnut Ave. Ages 40-plus are admitted. On Saturday, May 2, 6:30-9:30 p.m. enjoy Slick Nickel, a country music band. Free dance lessons 2-3:30 p.m., on Wednesdays.


WCHS science class visits wildlife management area

White County High School Applied Environmental Science, Agriscience, and Large Animal Science classes visited Bridgestone/Firestone Wildlife Management Area and Centennial Wilderness on April 17. The students hiked 6.8 miles while learning about the diverse ecosystem in eastern White County, which consists of 18,000 acres of wildlife habitat, trails, streams and scenic views. Pictured with the students are Kyler Moore – WCHS Agriculture Teacher, James Douglas – Manager, and Technicians – Paul Stockton and Richard Underwood.


Gas prices update

Average retail gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 8.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.32/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 3,821 gas outlets in Tennessee. This compares with the national average that has increased 8.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.54/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. The national average has increased 10.7 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 116.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.


Tornado siren test at 1 p.m. today

A test of the City of Sparta’s weather siren will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, weather permitting. Testing will not be done during inclement weather so as no to confuse the public about an actual weather threat.

Charles L. Moore, 64, of Cookeville, passed away April 26, 2015, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Allen Gay

William Allen Gay, 68, of Sparta, passed away April 25, 2015, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mr. Gay was born June 10, 1946, in McMinnville, the son of Euin Bell Gay and Emmie Lizza Pinegar Gay.

He was employed as a custodian in the White County School system for many years.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gay was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel R. Gay and James L. Gay, and two half- sisters, Mary Jones and Reba Davidson.

Survivors include three sisters, Mae (Luther) Parsley, of Sparta, Leslie Ludwig, of Sparta, Carolyn (Kenneth) Smith, of Sparta; brother, Joe Gay of Wyandotte, Michigan; sister-in-law, Wilma Gay, … CONTINUED
