Sims family reunion

There will be a Sims family reunion, on July 4, at the home of Mildred Sims Geer. Potluck lunch a noon. Friends and family are invited.

Christopher Louis Battaglia

On June 27, 2015, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta, Christopher Louis Battaglia, 61, of Sparta, went home to his Lord and Saviour after a long illness.

Mr. Battaglia was born Oct. 27, 1953, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Salvador Battaglia and Sammie Battaglia.

He met his beloved wife, Gwen Hartman Battaglia, in New Orleans, and was joined in marriage, on June 23, 1996. He was full of pride as he raised his two loving boys. He was a facilitator and board member of Clean Heart Christian Ministries, taking part in 357 meetings. He was a friend to many, and all will miss his contagious smile.


James Dale Billings

James Dale Billings, 70, of Doyle, passed away June 29, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Billings was born April 20, 1945, in Whitehead, North Carolina, the son of Lon Billings and Margie Halsey Billings.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several sisters and brothers.

Survivors include two brothers, Jerry Billings and wife Betty, of Doyle Larry Billings and wife Wendy, of Maryland; sister, Evelyn Wagoner, of Maryland; son, Donald Billings, of Sparta, North Carolina; daughter, Tonya Jones, of Haverde Grace, Maryland; and many nieces and nephews.

No arrangements were provided.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Emergency workers transported one individual up a steep ravine into an ambulance to be transported for medical treatment for injuries suffered in the crash.

Tennessee Highway Patrol, White County Sheriff Department, White County Emergency Medical Services, Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, Mt. Gilead Volunteer Fire Department and Hickory Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to a traffic crash on McMinnville Highway at Wheat’s Curve, where a vehicle traveled off the roadway into a ravine. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

TBI Top Ten fugitive from Warren County captured in Florida

A fugitive on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top Ten Most Wanted list, Bryan James Cooke, was captured Tuesday morning in Jacksonville, Florida, a day after being added to the list.

Early this morning, Cooke was arrested at a hotel in Jacksonville by officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. A Jeep that had been stolen from the residence of Gail and Gary Dodson, in McMinnville, was recovered in the parking lot of a nearby Jacksonville business.

Bryan Cooke was placed on the TBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted list on June 29. He was wanted by the Warren County Sheriff’s Department and TBI on two counts of Criminal Homicide. … CONTINUED

Taylor’s Providence Free Will Baptist Church

Taylor’s Providence Free Will Baptist Church will have a homecoming and decoration, on Sunday, July 12. Bro. Philip Luna will preach the morning message. Also, a revival begins on Monday, July 13, with Bro. Clayton Lee as the evangelist. Services begin at 7 p.m., each night, with pre-prayer service at 6:45 p.m. Special singing each night. Bro. Seth Price, pastor, invites everyone to attend.

Mary Etta Yates

Mary Etta Yates was called home to her Lord and Savior June 28, 2015.

She was born to Lawrence and Lillie Mae Fletcher, on Feb. 19, 1935, in Sparta.

Mrs. Yates was raised in the mountains of White County, Tennessee, until her teenage years, when her family moved to Charleston, South Carolina. There in Charleston, in 1952, at a five and dime store, she met her Marine and husband, Robert Augusta Yates Jr. He brought her back to Texas with him where they began their life together.

She was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to so many. She gave selflessly of herself to her family, … CONTINUED

County mowing along roadways

Mowing is taking place on some county roads this morning. Drivers should exercise caution when approaching the mowers.

Doyle July 4 firework show

On July 4, Doyle will be holding their annual fireworks show at the Doyle Community Center. The show will begin at dark. If rain prevents the show from taking place, the fireworks show will take place the next night.

Dortha Teeple Advocacy Award presented on June 26

On June 26, Upper Cumberland Area Agency on Aging and Disability recognized volunteers who serve with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program /Senior Medicare Patrol, Guardianship and Ombudsman programs.

Each year the SHIP/SMP programs present the Dortha Teeple Advocacy Award to a volunteer that goes above and beyond. For 2015, the award was presented to Carolyn Aronson, who volunteers in Fentress County. Teeple, who had lived in White County, was a previous SHIP/SMP volunteer who began advocating for seniors and affordable medication when she was 72 years old.
