Celebrating 80th birthday

Emma Jean Copeland, of Sparta, celebrated her 80th birthday Sept. 25, with her sister, children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Her husband was David Bradley Copeland, who passed away a few years ago.

•Assistant Principal Charles Dycus resigned from White County Junior High and moved to teach at a private school near Nashville. Dycus taught at the junior high for year and was assistant principal for two years before leaving.
•White County Hospital got its first electric bed in 1975 due to a donation from Sparta Woman’s Club. The bed itself was $2,000, and the Woman’s Cub used award money they had received from previous years to purchase the bed.
•District Governor Hugh Marlin visited White County Lions Club and discussed the upcoming White Cane Day.  He informed the Lions of his recent visits with other organizations supported by the … CONTINUED


Jeanne Mitchell Franklin

Jeanne Mitchell Franklin, 70, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 27, 2015, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was a retired school teacher.

Mrs. Franklin was born Feb. 4, 1945.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m., Oct. 3, 2015, at Highland Cemetery.  Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Oct. 2, at Hunter Funeral Home.

Appreciation Cookout

Everyone is welcome. The community is asked to bring cards of appreciation to the event for the law enforcement officers and first responders. Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth and White County Sheriff Oddie Shoupe will speak at the event. Other officials will also be part of the event. It’s homecoming week in White County

Homecoming week is always an exciting time during football season, not just for the players, but for the entire student body.

This week, both White County High School and White County Middle School are enjoying homecoming festivities. White County High School will have a week full of activities that culminates Friday with the big game against McMinn County.

WCMS actually began their homecoming activities with dress up days last Thursday and their homecoming will culminate Tuesday with the game against Coffee County.

Staci Dildine has been selected as the 2015 WCHS homecoming queen. The WCMS homecoming queen is Gabby Young.

Fox sets a new WCHS record

The White County High School cross country team competed at the Sharp Springs Invitational Saturday in Smyrna. Caleb Fox and Tamera Webb brought home trophies. Fox finished 3rd out of 98 runners in the silver division race. His time of 17:05.27 set a new WCHS record. Webb finished 14th out of 71 girls in the silver division race. Her time was 22:30.50. The Warriors, as a team, finished 9th in the high school boys’ silver division.


Jo Ann Passons

Jo Ann Passons, 77, of Sparta, passed away today at NHC Healthcare of Smithville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Emergency Services Stair Climb

Members of every emergency services agency in White County came together today to pay tribute to the service of White County’s emergency workers by climbing the stairs of the White County Courthouse 3.5 times. Mayor Jeff Young and County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson were present and proclaimed the day as White County Emergency Services Day. T.C. Good, pictured below, was the first to complete the stair climb. Each individual who completed the climb returned to the courtroom, rang the bell, and gave their name, years of service, and read the names of those who were not present or who had passed away.

Aaron Shafer Memorial Bike Ride

The annual Aaron Shafer Memorial Bike Ride is now in full swing. Registration starts at 8 a.m., at Central Church of Christ, in the parking lot, with the ride starting at 9 a.m. All ages were welcomed. The routes range from 1.25 miles to 60 miles – your choice. The event is a fundraiser for the Aaron Shafer Memorial Foundation.

TDOT weekly report

WHITE COUNTY, SR-111 (Spencer Hwy.) repair of bridge over Calfkiller River (LM 6.37) in Sparta: Work on this project is complete and final inspection has been done. The contractor will be addressing punchlist items during this report period. Estimated project completion date is September 2015. [Mid-State Construction Co, Inc./Sorrelle/CNN292]

WHITE COUNTY, SR-111 installation of an overhead sign structure at U.S. 70S (SR-1, LM 3.39): The contractor will begin work once the shop drawings of the structure have been approved.
