TDOT activity report for Oct. 8-15

WHITE AND PUTNAM COUNTIES, SR-111 resurfacing from north of SR-136 in White County (LM 17.43) to north of SR-136 in Putnam County (LM 2.03): Work on this project is nearing completion. The contractor will be performing final clean up within the project limits, including ramps. Motorists should use caution and be alert to construction equipment and vehicles within the work zone. Warriors take on state’s fourth ranked team

WCHS heads to Ooltewah Friday

When the new classifications were instituted by the TSSAA for high school football, everyone knew the Warriors would be facing an extremely tough schedule this fall.

That has definitely held true.

As good as the schedule has been thus far, the Warriors may be facing the toughest defense they have faced all season when they travel to Ooltewah Friday to take on the Owls, who are ranked 4th in the latest Associated Press Class 5A poll.

The Owls come into Friday’s game at 5-1. Their lone loss of the season was in the season opener to Riverdale.

Warriorettes take on Ooltewah Monday

After their Cinderella run to the District 6AAA championship game, the Warriorette volleyball team will head to Ooltewah High School Monday for the Region 3AAA tournament.

WCHS will take on Ooltewah (42-11) at 5 p.m. (central time) in the first semifinal game.  Ooltewah has won two out of the last three region championships and defeated Walker Valley 3-2 (25-12, 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 15-6) in the 3AAA championship.

Cookeville (35-4), the District 6AAA champion, will take on 3AAA runner, Walker Valley (28-12) in the second semifinal game at 6:30 p.m.

The championship game is set for Tuesday at Ooltewah.


Blood drive ends 5 p.m.

A blood drive is taking place at the Sparta Civic Center until 5 p.m. A quota of 29 pints is possible, as Geneva Cotten said, “it has been slow but steady.” Stop by today to support The American Red Cross with blood donations to Vanderbilt Medical Center. The next blood drive will take place on December 10, from noon until 5 p.m.


Rogers appointed codes enforcement officer for Doyle

Concerns with the condition of residences in Doyle have led the Doyle Board of Mayor and Aldermen to appoint Alderman Jerry Rogers as Doyle’s codes enforcement officer, during their Oct. 6 meeting.

Following last month’s meeting, in which the board discussed complaints they have received about a Doyle trailer park, the board began researching their options in handling possible code violations within the city.

Mayor Ray Spivey stated that one option would be to appoint an alderman as a codes enforcer.

Vice Mayor Tim Brock made a motion to make Alderman Jerry Rogers codes enforcement officer of the city.

The motion passed unanimously.

Liberty Square: A Lester Flatt Celebration wins IBMA award

An annual Sparta event that draws bluegrass fans far and wide has won a prestigious international award that highlights the very best in bluegrass worldwide each year.

During the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 26th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards ceremony on Oct. 1 in Raleigh, North Carolina, the 2014 Liberty Square: A Lester Flatt Celebration, which celebrated what would have been the 100th birthday of Lester Flatt, was named the bluegrass event of the year.

Kimberly Williams, who coordinates of the event each year, accepted the award, along with her husband Blake Williams.

Suspect charged in double shooting

Suspect Willie Nathan Jones has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault and second degree murder in connection with the double shooting that took place yesterday on White Oak Flatt Road in Putnam County.

The incident was first reported in a 911 call that was received at approximately 4:54 a.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015. The caller stated that two people had been shot. Deputies arrived to find one deceased male, Rodney Alan Richards, 47, at the home where the incident occurred. The second victim, a female, was located at a nearby address and was airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital, in Nashville. She has undergone surgery and is in … CONTINUED

Annetta Boissonneault, 54, of Walling, passed away Oct. 7, 2015, at her home.

She was born Nov. 1, 1960, in Spencer, the daughter of Joe Sullivan and Daisy Mooneyham Sulivan.

No service is planned at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rodney Alan Richards, 47, of Putnam County, passed away Oct. 7, 2015, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
