Million Dollar Mile yard sale

White County revenue improved since July

For White County, the total revenue collected has increased from July to August by about $249,486. This trend is similar to what is seen statewide.

White County collected a total of $1,996,034 in revenue for the state. This is marginally larger than the revenue collected in July in the amount of $1,746,548. The category that made the difference was the inheritance tax.

In August, White County collected $331,711 in local sales tax, $1,388,352 in state sales tax, $28,660 in realty transfer and mortgage tax, $68,064 in motor vehicle tax, $177,000 in inheritance tax, and $2,247 in income tax.

Jobless rates follow declining trend

Tennessee’s unemployment rates for August 2015 have been released by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development and show a statewide unemployment rate of 5.7 percent.

As a state, the rate remained the same from July 2015, but follows the trend of the United States average. For the U.S., the unemployment rate has dropped from 5.3 percent to 5.1 percent from July to August.

BonDeCroft Elementary hosts S.T.E.M. night

BonDeCroft Elementary School hosted S.T.E.M night on September 24.  S.T.E.M stands for science, technology, engineering and math.  There was a great turn out for the event and the student absolutely loved it and came back to school asking when we were having another S.T.E.M night!  The first picture is principal, Sara Cope, checking on one of her science experiments. The second picture is Peyton Nicholas with her dad, creating a roller coaster out of pool noodles. Honaker pleads guilty in Shoemaker murder

Three men who had been charged with causing death of John Howard Shoemaker III in 2014 have now pled guilty, according to Detective Chris Isom, of White County Sheriff Department.

On Sept. 21, Joe Daniel Honaker pled guilty to aggravated assault resulting in the death of another, making him the final defendant to plead in the case, as Jared Dewayne Holmes and Bart Kirby had previously accepted plea agreements as offered by the District Attorney General’s office.

On April 7, 2014, Shoemaker had been reported missing by friends and family, and concerned citizens began searching for him.

Collett inducted into NSCS

Jessica B. Collett, of Sparta, has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Collett is finishing her accounting degree and currently has a 3.7 GPA and was recently inducted into the NSCS for her academic success and hard work.

Crossville holding Oktoberfest

Preparations are underway for the 25th annual Oktoberfest, in Crossville. The German festival will be held on Oct. 9-10, at the Knights of Columbus Activity Park, 2892 Highway 70 East , three miles east of downtown Crossville (Exit 322 off I-40, south to Highway 70, then 1/3 mile east).

The festivities will kick off with the traditional tapping of the keg at 11.30 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 9. Continuous music will then run immediately after until 9:30 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 10, another day of fun, food, music and excitement will be 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m.

CRMC to host health fair

Cookeville Regional Medical Center will be hosting its quarterly Health Fair, 7-10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, in the hospital’s Education Center, located inside the east entrance of the hospital beside the emergency room.

The Health Fair is open to the public and provides an opportunity for community members to participate in affordable health screenings to stay abreast of their health. Registration is required to attend. To register and to see complete pricing of all screenings, please visit the hospital’s website at or call the Community Wellness Department at (931) 783-2743.
