TDCI offers planning tips as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam has declared Feb. 28. to Mar. 5, 2016, as Severe Weather Awareness Week to encourage all Tennesseans to make planning and preparing for severe weather a priority. To coincide with this awareness event, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance  is reminding consumers to plan ahead for emergencies that may result from the harsh weather that often occurs in the spring months.

TDCI shares these emergency planning tips from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners:

•Make sure you have bottled water, a first aid kit, flashlights, a battery-powered radio, non-perishable food items, blankets, clothing, prescription drugs, eyeglasses, personal hygiene supplies, a cell phone charger … CONTINUED

Tennessee state park hosts statewide hikes to celebrate spring

Tennessee’s 56 State Parks are hosting statewide hikes and a photo contest on March 19 to celebrate the coming of spring.

All hikes will be guided by Park staff who can speak to the natural, cultural and historical treasures that Tennessee State Parks has to offer. From the cypress swamps of the Mississippi River in West Tennessee to the rugged ridge tops and waterfalls in the middle of the state to the majestic mountains in the East, every Park showcases a unique piece of Tennessee’s outdoor beauty.

TDOT construction March 3-9

White County, SR-84 repair of bridge over Calfkiller River (LM 1.58): Work on this project has begun. Weather permitting, the contractor will be installing construction signs during this report period. Estimated project completion date is July 2016. [Mid-State Construction Co., Inc./Sorrelle/CNP302]

Van Buren County, SR-111 grading, drainage, and paving from south of Manus Road to south of SR-285 near Double Bridge Road: Work on this project continues. Grading and blasting operations continue and the contractor is addressing the slope with removal of unsuitable material and installing graded solid rock within the construction zone. Crash on Bockman Way

A three vehicle crash has occurred near 357 W. Bockman Way, in front of Coffman Muffler. The crash has been reported as a no-injury collision. Sparta Police are responding.

Sparta First Free Will Baptist revival

Sparta First Free Will Baptist Church will have a revival March 6-9. Bro. Irvin Parker will be preaching during the 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday worship services. Bro Rudy Oakes will be the evangelist for the Monday-Wednesday services, at 7 p.m. nightly. Special singing each service.

Rescue Squad holds benefit to assist member Sondra Brady

Sparta-White County Volunteer Rescue Squad is hosting an all-you-can-eat benefit breakfast, 6-10 a.m., Saturday, March 26,  at the Rescue Squad building, located at 320 E. Bockman Way, for Sondra “Ma” Brady, wife of Tick Brady, to help cover Tick’s final expenses.

Sondra is an honorary member of the Rescue Squad, and she lost her husband in January.

The cost is $6.00 per plate. The menu includes: Biscuits, gravy, eggs, country ham, sausage, potatoes, orange juice and coffee.

There will also be a silent auction.

Sparta firefighters work late night fire at Cloud 9 Vapors

Sparta firefighters responded to a fire at Cloud 9 Vapors, located at 287 N. Spring Street just before 11 p.m. last night. According to Chief Kirk Young, there was a great turnout of responders and they remained on the scene until 1:45 a.m. They returned later to finish cleanup.

The fire is ruled suspicious, and fire investigator Jeff Hutson was called in to examine the scene, Young states.

There was no serious damage to any other building occupant, however there was some smoke in some of the surrounding businesses.
