Treasure Chest at Sparta-White County Senior Center

Check out the Treasure Chest at Sparta-White County Senior Center, at 321 E. Bronson St. You can find everything from household goods to furniture, with everything reasonably priced. All proceeds benefit the senior center. The Treasure Chest, which is staffed by volunteers, is located adjacent to the center, inside the enclosed shuffleboard court/pavilion. Hours of operation for the Treasure Chest are 8 a.m.-noon, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Donations for the Treasure Chest will be accepted at the Senior Center during normal hours of operation. No clothing, please. For more information call (931) 836-3663.


Accident with injuries reported on Cane Hollow Road

Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, Cassville Volunteer Fire Department, White County Emergency Medical Services, Tennessee Highway Patrol and White County Sheriff Department have been dispatched to a crash, reportedly with injuries on Cane Hollow Road, near the lake. There are reportedly three individuals in a single vehicle.


Rodger Glenn Brown

Rodger Glenn Brown, 62, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 26m 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Brown was born April 10, 1954, in Sparta, the son of S.D. Brown and Willie Roberts Brown.

He was preceded in death by his father; a son, Darryl “Toad” Brown; a sister, Deborah Deck; and a sister-in-law, Libby Slatten.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Brown, of Sparta; son, Andy Brown, of Sparta; mother, Willie Brown, of Sparta; two granddaughters, Shelby Brown, Ryan Norris, both of Sparta; three sisters, Rhonda Hawkins (Stan), of Walling, Janice Prater (Bob), of Sparta; Vicky Cole (Bufford), of Sparta; two brothers, Stephen Brown (Misty), of Sparta, Jim Brown (Judy), … CONTINUED


Leola Smith Busbee

Leola Smith Busbee, 94, of Pleasant Hill, passed away Aug. 25, 2016, at Hospice at Cumberland County.

A memorial service will be 5 p.m., Sept. 3, 2016, at Memorial Baptist Church, in Crossville.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


TTU’s first home football game of 2016 covered by WCTE

Tennessee Tech’s first home game, Thursday, September 1, will be covered and broadcast by WCTE Upper Cumberland PBS from 6-9 p.m. Tune in and support theGolden Eagles as they go up against Wofford.

In addition to this first game, WCTE will cover each of TTU’s home games including TTU vs. EKU, 6-9 p.m., Oct. 1;  TTU vs. Eastern Illinois , 6-9 p.m., Oct. 15; TTU vs. SEMO, which will be Tech’s homecoming with the parade being covered  10:30 -11:30 a.m. and the game being covered 1:30-4:30 p.m.; and TTU vs. Murray, 1:30-4:30 p.m., Nov. 19.

Convoy of Hope arrives in Cookeville with $1 million in food, giveaways and services

Convoy of Hope will stop in Cookeville, on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Putnam County Fairgrounds to provide a day of free food, goods and services. The community event is one of dozens Convoy of Hope will host in 2016 throughout the United States.

WHAT: A free event offering $1 million in free goods and services including groceries, health services, haircuts, family portraits, job services, a kids zone, a hot meal, veteran services and more.

While supplies last — all are welcome. No I.D. required.

WHY: Provides an opportunity for more than 1,000 local community volunteers to share hope and tangible help with thousands of their neighbors and help … CONTINUED

Warriors look to go to 2-0 against Dragons

For the second straight year, the Warriors will be looking to improve to 2-0 with a win over York Institute.

The Dragons come into Warrior Stadium at 0-1 for the non-district contest. This will be the eighth straight meeting between the two teams with the Warriors having won five of the previous seven. WCHS has won three in a row. The Dragons were winners in 2009 and 2012 and both were shutouts. The two teams have played 15 times in the last 40 years with WCHS holding the 10-5 advantage. The Warriors won last year’s meeting in Jamestown 39-21.

Thursday, August 25th, local sports results

It was another busy afternoon in local sports action on Thursday, August 25th.

The White County High School soccer team got their first victory of the season when they defeated Livingston Academy 4-1.

The Warrior golf team came up just short against visiting Cookeville on Thursday in an 18-hole match at the Sparta Country Club.  The Warriors had a solid day on the links, but Cookeville continues to put together stellar team performances.  The Cavaliers checked in with a 295 while the Warriors teamed up for a 304.

The WCHS volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by visiting Rhea County.  The WCMS volleyball team defeated Avery Trace.
