Expressing thankfulness for God in prayer

I remember when my oldest daughter was a toddler, she would begin her prayers to God in such a sweet way, “Dear God, we are thankful for God . . .” It sounded so cute as she innocently stated the phrase; yet, I think she was on to something that we may have forgotten. Make time to pray

Do you believe in the power of prayer? A group of physicians were used in double-blind “drug” studies of the efficacy of Christian prayer on healing. Patients from the San Francisco General Medical Center were randomly divided into placebo and test groups. Patients in the test group were prayed for by Christians; the placebo group received no prayer. There were no statistical differences between the placebo and the prayer groups before prayer was initiated. Celebrate Child Health Week

October 3 -9 is Child Health Week, and across the Upper Cumberland, local health departments and community health centers will be conducting various activities focusing on the health of children in recognition of this week.

White County Health Department and Community Health Center wants to help keep everyone’s healthy. Please make sure children are current on their well child and dental exams and are current on all their immunizations. Don’t forget to eat fruits and veggies daily and get 60 minutes of exercise most days of the week.

Car seat inspections provide education to parents

Troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol spent an afternoon at the White County Health Department on, Sept. 29, as part of Child Passenger Safety Week, inspecting car seats for parents to ensure their most precious cargo reaches their destination safely.

A number of vehicles came through and were inspected by Lt. Jimmy Neal, Sgt. Kent Norris and Trooper Darrell Winningham, not only to ensure the seats were properly installed but also to check for any recalls and to ensure they were not expired.

Chamber to launch new website

There has been a great deal of change over the past year at the Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce, and to continue the positive momentum, the board of directors has decided to move forward with a new Chamber Master website that Director Marvin Bullock believes will open Sparta and White County to a much wider online audience.

The move to a new website service had been discussed at a recent Chamber work session, however Chamber Master, which hosts a member management system that allows users access to a database that summarizes pertinent data and have complete control over updating and changing content, recently offered to waive their $3,000 … CONTINUED

EMS, Doyle VFD receive grant funds

Two White County emergency services departments have received $630,000 in Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

The application process began nearly one year ago. On Sept. 29, 2016, both departments announced they received notification of receipt of the grant funds.

Doyle Volunteer Fire Department announced they had received $315,000, which will be used to purchase a new fire engine and other equipment for the department.

The department’s current fire engine is over 20 years old.

Jewell Hoffman Johnson

Jewell Hoffman Johnson, 87, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 2, 2016, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hodge compiles book of poetry

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00061]Gene Hodge was born in Sparta, Tennessee. His first poem was composed while a senior at White County High. After graduation he attended McKenzie College, in Chattanooga. Hodge served in the U.S. Army, and after discharge, and to the present, has been a member of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 175. He now resides in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee.

Hodge is well known for entertaining at numerous events in Sparta, with his talented version of Elvis Presley chart-toppers.

This book is a lifetime achievement, said Hodge, and solely created by his talents from cover design to publishing.

Gearldene Exum Blaylock

Gearldene Exum Blaylock, 73, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 30, 2016, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mrs. Blaylock was born June 6, 1943, in White County, to Luther Exum and Ova Lennie Dobbs Exum.

She was a former hairdresser. Mrs. Blaylock also went to nursing school where she went on to be a CNA. She loved to volunteer in her community so she could help others.

Mrs. Blaylock was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Gordon Blaylock; sister, Jean Phillips; and brothers Jim Exum, Oakley Exum and Royce Exum.

Survivors include her daughter, Angela Kay Blaylock Parrish, of Manchester; brother, Luther Exum and wife … CONTINUED
