WCMS 6th and 7th grade teams win 3 out of 4 against DeKalb Middle

On Monday night, The White County Middle School 6th grade and 7th grade teams took on the DeKalb Middle School teams.

In the first game of the evening, the 6th grade girls’ teams were able to come away with a 32-13 win. In the 6th grade boys’ game, the Warriors were able to get away with a 36-21 victory. In the 7th grade games, the Warriorettes lost 42-14, but the Warriors won 35-33.

Warriors and Warriorettes get wins on the first day of Sonic Shootout

The Warriors and Warriorettes both got wins on Tuesday night in their first game of the Sonic Shootout.

In the boys’ game, the Warriors defeated the Tullahoma Wildcats 84-26. The Warriors would not only get the win, but Pierce Whited would score his 1,000-point as a Warrior.

In the girls’ game, the Warriorettes came away with a 78-62 victory over the Murfreesboro Central Magnet Lady Tigers.

In the boys’ game, the Warriors got the scoring started quickly. In the first 15 seconds of the game, the Warriors already had a 3-0 lead. Cole Crosland found Pierce Whited in the left corner for an open three to open up … CONTINUED

New insurance law ensures drivers comply with financial responsibility

The state is cracking down on drivers who get behind the wheel without insurance coverage, with a new database for insurers to report insurance coverage to and a system of warnings, fines and even registration suspension for failure for drivers to comply with the state’s financial responsibility law.

Tennessee law requires driers to carry car insurance, but the new law, the James Lee Atwood Jr. Law, which goes into effect next month, aims to reduce the number of drivers on the road without insurance.

The law was passed during the 2015 legislative session.

Jail thanks volunteers with appreciation lunch ceremony

Volunteers are hard to come by in today’s fast-paced world. Finding volunteers to serve those convicted of crimes is an especially challenging feat, but Lt. Donna Daniels, of the White County Justice Center, has managed to accomplish coordinating a successful volunteer program to educate the jail population.

This long list of volunteers was honored on Dec. 14, with an appreciation luncheon to recognize their commitment to the program.

Both Warriors and Warriorettes will play in Sonic Shootout Championship Tomorrow

The Warriors and Warriorettes both got wins today. The Warriors defeated Cannon County 70-56. Jared Carter had 17 points to lead the way for the Warriors. The Warriorettes beat MTCS 64-53. Hannah Leftwich had 26 points to lead the way for the Warriorettes. The Warriors and Warriorettes will both play Cookeville in the Championship tomorrow. Tomorrow all students will get in free if they wear maroon.

Melinda Anne Leeds Jeffries

Melinda Anne Leeds Jeffries, 39, passed away Dec. 1, 2016.

She was born Feb. 14, 1977, in Somers Point, New Jersey, and had lived in Sparta for approximately 20 years.

Survivors include her parents, Robert Leeds and Suzanne Leeds; two children, Savanah Jeffries, Tyler Jeffries; three brothers; and two sisters.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Jan. 7, 2017, in Sparta.


Carolyn Rene Jones

Carolyn Rene Jones, 56, of Sparta, passed Dec. 18, 2016, Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 27, 1960, in Wayne County, Michigan. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Rosita Ochoa Jones; nephew, SPC Joey David “Boomer” Jones II; and niece Lisa Vance.

Marie Cunningham Lewis

Marie Cunningham Lewis, 92, of the Lost Creek community of White County, passed away Dec. 20, 2016, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Lewis was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Lost Creek, to John Beecher Cunningham and Nancy Lela Anderson Cunningham.

She was a retired manager of the White County Farmers Co-op and a member of the Lost Creek Methodist Church. She was also a longtime election volunteer.

Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Powell Kimbrough Lewis; and son-in-law, William G. “Bill” Frazier.

Albert Franklin “Jack” Frasier Jr.

Albert Franklin “Jack” Frasier Jr., 95, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 18, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Frasier was born June 26, 1921, in Sparta, to Albert Franklin Frasier Sr., and Bessie Lyles Frasier.

He was a former magazine salesman and later a White County School bus driver. Mr. Frasier was an avid fisherman and gardener. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a VFW commander in Dayton, Ohio, and in Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Willene Brown Anderson Frasier; brothers Tom Frasier, Bob Frasier, Carl Frasier, Samuel Frasier; and sister, Martha Kay Frasier.

Donna Jean Gentry Roam

Donna Jean Gentry Roam, 41, of the DeRossett community of White County, passed away Dec. 18, 2016.

Mrs. Roam was born May 31, 1975, in Detroit, Michigan, to Donald Lee and Victoria Denise Parker Gentry.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Roam was preceded in death by her grandparents, Nannie and Frank Ray Gentry.
