2017 National Safe Boating Week

The 2017 National Safe Boating Week is May 20-26 and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will be participating to promote the wear of life jackets as the summer boating season begins.

The Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day is Friday, May 19 with the goal of demonstrating how easy it is to wear a life jacket. Participants wear a life jacket to work, demonstrating how easy to wear one, even while at work. Those who wear a life jacket to work are asked to have a photograph taken and message the Wear IT! Facebook page. Group photos are also welcome.

Cookeville History Museum exhibit challenges kids to simply “escape”

“The end game is to unlock the museum to escape,” Beth Thompson, Cookeville museums manager, said. “Clues will lead you to the key.”

An opening reception will be held May 20 from 1-3 p.m. Admission is free.

No preparation is necessary.

“We will provide everything participants need to solve these clues,” Thompson said. “There may be a little detective work, but it’s all within the confines of the museum.”

The exhibit features two different routes – one for ages 5-8, who can take an adult along to help them solve the clues, and another for ages 9-12 that is more challenging.

City officials ready for upcoming events

The City of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen held their bi-monthly meeting this evening. One of the items discussed by city leaders was the numerous events that are scheduled to take place this weekend around Liberty Square.

On Friday, May 19, 2017, their will be two events taking place around Liberty Square. Starting at 4:00 pm, the Sparta Green Market will officially kick off its season. The Green Market will feature numerous vendors of all varieties and is known for being a local favorite event. Also on Friday starting at 7:00 pm will be the Bluegrass on the Square event.

Simpson-Trivette takes reins of Warriorette volleyball program

There will be changes all around at the helm of each of White County’s volleyball programs next season. Joni Simpson-Trivette has been named the new White County High School Volleyball Coach.

Simpson-Trivette takes the reins of the high school program after having been the head coach of the Middle School Volleyball team the past two season. Simpson-Trivette takes over for Danielle Hillis who stepped down recently.

Lila F. Carver, 78, of Sparta, passed away May 17, 2017, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha “Cat” Whittenburg

Martha “Cat” Whittenburg, 61, of Sparta, passed away May 16, 2017, at her residence.

Ms. Whittenburg was born March 21, 1956, in White County.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Kirby, and two brothers, Joe Kirby and Michael Kirby.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Mandy) Whittenburg, of Crossville, William (Jenae) Whittenburg, of Rocky River; daughter, April (John) Margeson, of Sparta; three grandchildren, Tacoma Shiane Whittenburg, Christopher Garrick Page, Willie Jason Margeson Jr.; mother, Lillian Kirby, of Sparta; two sisters, Linda (Rick) Manus, of McMinnville, Charlene Kirby, of Sparta; two brothers, Earl (Judy) Kirby, of Spencer, Chester (Michelle) Kirby, of Spencer; sister-in-law, Donna Kirby, of Sparta; … CONTINUED

Robert ”Sarge” Douglas Roberts

Robert ”Sarge” Douglas Roberts, 87, of Sparta, passed away May 16, 2017, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mr. Roberts was born Feb. 28, 1930, in Sparta, to William Vance Roberts and Minnie Alice Smith Roberts.

He served his country in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Roberts retired from the U.S. Army after serving more than 26 years.

In service to his country, his accomplishments included National Defense Service Medal-w/OLC, Good Conduct Medal 8th Award, Distinguished Service Cross Medal, Purple Heart 3d OLC, Silver Star, United Nations Service Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 BRONZE STARS, Korean Service Medal with 1 Silver … CONTINUED
