More than a dozen enjoying the new Skate Park

More than a dozen people of various ages are taking the opportunity to enjoy the new Sparta Skate Park. 

Although the Skate Park hasn’t had its grand opening ceremony yet, plenty are enjoying the weather and trying out the new park. 

The Sparta Skate Park is located next to Libery Square. 

Two car collision on Hwy 111 at Roosevelt Drive

Update 1:39 pm: Highway 111 and Roosevelt Drive have both been cleared of debris and reopened by emergency service personnel. 

At approximately 12:50 pm, dispatchers with the White County E-911 Communications Center received an emergency call in regards to a multi-vehicle accident with possible injuries.

The accident occurred at the Highway 111 and Roosevelt Drive intersection on the southbound side. Two vehicles were involved in this incident.

Sparta Fire Department, Sparta Police Department, and White County EMS personnel are currently on the scene.

Part of the intersection and the northbound turning lane for Roosevelt Drive (McDonald’s side) are currently blocked. Emergency responders are working … CONTINUED

Squirrel season opens May 13

Tennessee’s 2017 spring hunting season for gray, fox and red squirrels opens Saturday, May 13 and will continue through Sunday, June 11.

The daily bag limit is 10, the same for the fall/winter squirrel season which is held from late August to the end of February.

There are five species of tree squirrels found in Tennessee. Two species, the southern flying squirrel and the northern flying squirrel, are not hunted. They are small, nocturnal and rarely seen.

Sean Austin Will, a White County resident, was among students who received degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin during spring commencement held May 6, 2017, in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on the UT Martin campus.


Cookeville man indicted on 12 counts of forgery and theft

According to a press release issued on May 8, 2017, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office investigated a complaint that Tony Ray Nash, 39, of Nash Road, in Baxter, forged and cashed several checks without the consent of the account holders. Investigator Bryan Whitefield presented evidence related to this investigation to the Putnam County Grand Jury. Nash was indicted on 12 counts of forgery and theft. The initial court appearance date is May 22, 2017.

James Leonard Mabe

James Leonard Mabe, 78, of Sparta, passed away today at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WCHS cheerleaders hold Cheer Camp for all elementary students

White County High School cheerleaders held their annual Cheer Camp, on May 1 and May 2, at White County High School. There were 50-plus elementary school students who attended the two-day event. The cheerleaders taught attendees a cheer, a chant and a dance. They also did some fun activities.

Free sports physicals May 11

One of the requirements to be able to compete in sports is to pass a physical. With changing medical costs, those are not always easy to come by for some of the young athletes. Several people in Sparta teamed up to make that happen at no cost for White County Middle School and White County High School athletes.

The physicals will be performed by White County physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and EMS personnel. Physicals will be held on May 11, 2017, at the White County High School Vocational Building. Sparta Country Club announces ABCD winners

Winners of the Wednesday scramble came in with a 7-under. The winning team was comprised of Tom Clark, Paulette Rose, Jason Goodwin and Jason Henry. All golfers are invited to come out and compete each Wednesday. The ABCD scramble is a blind draw. After all golfers are signed in and divided into groups, a blind draw will be held to decide the teams. All competitors should be signed in by 5:15 p.m.
