Fitzgerald Collision and Repair has announced a major expansion, 220 new jobs announced

Recently, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe and Fitzgerald Collision and Repair officials announced on June 29, 2017, that the company will undergo a major expansion in the Upper Cumberland region, including White County, and create 220 new jobs in the region.

Fitzgerald Collision and Repair has announced they will be investing $9 million to expand its existing facility in Rickman, Tennessee and establish new operation facilities in Sparta, Tennessee.

Rear-end collision on North Spring Street

At approximately 12:25 pm,  White County E-911 dispatchers received an emergency call regarding a possible rear-end collision that had occurred on North Spring Street, in Sparta.

Emergency responders with the Sparta Fire Department, White County Emergency Medical Services, and the Sparta Police Department were all dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found a maroon Chrysler Stratus had reportedly rear-ended a black Ford pick-up truck near El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant and L and L Auto Sales .

Emergency responders worked quickly to  clear the roadway from the debris cause by the incident and reopened the North Springs Street that was partially blocked. The Sparta Police Department is … CONTINUED

TBI investigating arrest-related death in Cookeville

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Special Agents are currently investigating an arrest-related death that occurred in the early morning hours in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Bryant Dunaway, 13th District Attorney General, has requested TBI Special Agents to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man while in the process of being arrested in the early morning hours by officers from the Cookeville Police Department.

Preliminary information that has been released indicates the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 Friday morning, when the Cookeville Police Department received a call alerting them to a man, identified as Richard Thomas Sparks, 37 years old, walking in the median of Interstate … CONTINUED

Russell Alan Ross

Russell Alan Ross, 54, of Smithville, passed away June 30, 2017, at Centennial Medical Center.

Mr. Ross was born Aug. 19, 1952, in Knoxville, the son of Sherman Ross and Sandra Wells. He was the husband of Misty Lee Ross.

The family has chosen cremation. No other arrangements have been made at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Saint Thomas Highlands in Sparta completes renovation of surgery and behavioral health departments

Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta,  has just completed a $280,000 renovation of the Surgery Department and the Behavioral Health department, which includes Senior Care. Saint Thomas Health is a part of Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit health system.

The Behavioral Health department has 10 beds, and is “usually at capacity,” according to Andy Wachtel, CEO of Saint Thomas Highlands, Saint Thomas DeKalb and Saint Thomas Stones River Hospitals. Paint, new flooring, cabinetry and updated workstations were included in the renovation, the first for this hospital department in nearly 10 years. Saint Thomas Health purchased the hospital in 2015.

TDOT program includes funding for bridge over Falling Water River

Senator Paul Bailey

State Senator Paul Bailey (R-Sparta) said today he is very pleased that the state’s new Comprehensive Multimodal Program includes funding for the Old SR-42 Bridge over Falling Water River, in White County. Bailey made the announcement after receiving confirmation, on June 30, 2017, that the project is on the list of bridges that the Tennessee Department of Transportation has slated for repair or replacement over the next three years.

“This is tremendous news,” said Senator Bailey, who is chairman of the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee. “It’s about safety first. Our bridges must be safe to protect the public.”

The White County Farmers’ Market is in full swing at Metcalf Park, in Sparta. The market is open every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday throughout the growing season. Most vendors are in place early in the morning, and the market is open until noon. Buyers need to get there early for best selections.

Most fruit and vegetable producers have reported a good crop. They have a variety of vegetables that are ready for the market. All local gardeners and producers are encouraged to participate in the market. There is no fee for sellers. All vendors must acquire a permit through the City of Sparta.
