New bar and grill to open in Sparta

Diana and Frank Del Toro are excited about their new business, on Churchill Drive, that will serve burgers, beer, and more.

Speculation has been swirling for months as to what kind of business is being constructed at 194 Churchill Dr., in Sparta. Finally it has been released that it will be a burger bar named “Frank’s.”

Donnie Roberts, 53, of Sparta, passed away this morning at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Rickey Carl Mott

Rickey Carl Mott, 63, of Sparta, passed away June 25, 2018, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mr. Mott was born June 14, 1955, in Sparta, to Josephine “Jo” Greene Mott and Benny Carl Mott.

He worked in the public works department for the City of Sparta. He was a longtime, active member of Hickory Valley Baptist Church and an avid outdoorsman, but most importantly, he was “Pa” to his family and work family.

Mr. Mott was preceded in death by his father; his grandmothers, Myrtle Hicks, Lily ” Granny Bill” Griffin; and grandfathers, Robert Edward Greene and Isaac Mott.

Little League 13-year-old division season comes to a close

The White County-Sparta Little League 13-year old division wrapped up their season this past week. The White County-Sparta Little League decided this year to start this league on a trial run and see how it went. The League will continue next season and will also add 14-year-olds into the league. The league regular season championship would be so close it would come down to the final night before it was decided. Maples Surveying would pull out the win and win the league. Sonic would finish the regular season in second place, and American flag would round out the standings. Seth Speck from Sonic would win the league’s sportsmanship … CONTINUED

TTU Board of Trustees approves 2.66 % tuition and fees increase

In a full agenda, the Tennessee Tech Board of Trustees approved a 2.66 percent tuition and fees increase, the addition of a new engineering building to the university’s master plan, and a proposed budget for 2018-2019.


For 2018-2019, an undergraduate student taking 12 credit hours will see an increase in maintenance fees of $102 per semester.

The university’s maintenance fee (also known as tuition) covers up to 12 credit hours per semester for a student. For 2018-2019, it will be $3,930 per semester, an increase of $102 over 2017-2018. This is a 2.66 percent increase. Out-of-state students pay this maintenance fee, plus a per semester out-of-state tuition … CONTINUED

WCHS and VBHS basketball teams wrap up summer camps

As the TSSAA dead period starts, the White County High School and Van Buren County High School basketball teams have finished their summer camps and will head into the second part of summer.

The basketball teams were allowed to attend camps or have scrimmage days of team-against-team competition during the month of June, but following dead period, only conditioning and weightlifting will be allowed.

The Warriors wrapped up their summer portion of work by traveling to Tennessee Tech, on Wednesday and Thursday. The Warriors’ varsity team and junior varsity team all got … CONTINUED

Cookeville to host three-day AMA Motorcycle Classic, Sept. 14-16

The thrills and spills of American Motorcycle Association racing will soon be more than just on a hillside in Buffalo Valley, as Cookeville welcomes the inaugural Cookeville Motorcycle Classic, a family oriented three-day weekend filled with adrenaline, multiple competitions, and racers from across the country, Sept. 14-16, 2018.

Putnam County is no stranger to AMA events, as Middle Tennessee Dragway has served as home to both professional and amateur hillclimb competitions in recent years.
