Oscar Waymon Young, Jr.

Oscar Waymon Young Jr., 77, of Sparta, passed away March 29, 2019, at TriStar Centennial Hospital, in Nashville.

Oscar “Junior” was born May 31, 1941, in the Indian Mound Community of DeKalb County, to Oscar Waymon and Ollie Mae Young.

Junior and his late wife, Brassie, were owners of White County Truck and Trailer Parts of Sparta.

When he was not working or spending time with his family, he was on the greens at Sparta Country Club, or you could find him    watching westerns, on TV.  He enjoyed watching all Tennessee Vols sports.

Matthew David Miller, 28, of Sparta, passed away March 27, 2019.

He was born May 30, 1990, in Putnam County.

Matthew David was an automation tech at Seimens.

KINGS BAY, Ga. – As citizens of Cookeville go about their daily lives, members of the U.S. Navy’s “Silent Service” work beneath the ocean’s waves, continuing a tradition that only a small fraction of military members will ever know: strategic deterrence.

Chief Petty Officer Joshua Brown who hails from Cookeville, Tennessee and is a 2003 graduate of Cookeville High School takes on the task to execute one of the Defense Department’s most important mission of strategic deterrence.

Edgar Evins State Park will host the 13th Annual Celebration of Spring and Easter Egg Hunt Saturday April 13th with activities and vendors 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Peninsula. Brian Corey Vaughn, 37, of Sparta, passed away March 27, 2019.    Mr. Vaughn was born Sept. 30, 1981, in Crossville.

He enjoyed working on cars and racing cars. He was a former member of Sparta-White County Rescue Squad and an automobile enthusiast, attending Rod Run every year with his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Clifton Vaughn Sr.; brother, Billy Clifton Vaughn Jr.; sister-in-law, Jennifer Vaughn; grandparents, Charlie and Evelyn Watson, Claude and Delia Vaughn; aunt, Vonda Disney; and several friends, Dewey Presley, Bronson McBride, Ritchie Summers, Todd Spivey, Tom Good, Greg Hutchings, and Paul Ryan.

Deborah Ann Lenoci, 61, of Sparta, passed away March 28, 2019, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

She was born April 19, 1957, in Galveston, Texas, the daughter of Robert Ramee and Elizabeth Elliott.

The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service will be at a later date.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mamie Ruth “Boots” Rice

Mamie Ruth Shockley “Boots” Rice, 80, of Disneyland Road, passed away March 27, 2019.

Mrs. Rice was born March 7, 1939, in Spencer, to Joe Willy Shockley and Demie Martin Shockley.

She was retired from Mallory. Mrs. Rice had been a long-time caregiver and a member of the Ole Country Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Ades Rice; daughter, Sarah Rice; son, Tony Rice; and a grandson, Keaton Rice.

Jennie “Rhea” Davis

Jennie “Rhea” Measles Davis, 79, of Quebeck, passed away March 28, 2019, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mrs. Davis was born Oct. 16, 1939, in Van Buren County, to Alfred C. Measles and Pearl Maynard Measles.

She was a member of Hickory Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Wayne Davis, of Quebeck; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mike Hale, of Quebeck; grandchildren, Michael Hale and wife Paulina, Anna Nicole Hale; great-grandchild, Ashton Davis Hale; two sisters, Willie Ruth Martin, of Spencer, Alma Jean Sparkman, of Spencer; and several nieces, nephews, numerous friends, and close relatives.

Warrior baseball defeats Stone Memorial twice

The White County High School Warriors cruised to a pair of victories versus the Panthers of Stone Memorial, on Monday and Tuesday nights. At home, the Warriors came away a 13-3 win and on the road they shut out the Panthers by the score of 11-0. The runs piled up for the Warriors as they rode their hot bats to great success.

In the March 25 game, the boys’ offense kicked off the first inning and set the tone for a runaway victory. Although Stone scored first off an error by Eli McDonald, the Warriors quickly secured the lead and began to build it. A line drive single … CONTINUED

Harper-led Lady Bears claim Cinderella title

Sparta’s hometown sports standout during her high school career, Kellie Jolly Harper, and the Missouri State Lady Bears have taken claim to the name Cinderella as they advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.  The Lady Bears are now the lowest seed that is still in the big dance.

On March 25, the Harper-led Lady Bears took on and defeated a very strong number three-seeded Iowa State team.

Sparta’s Deandra Luna earns NAIA All American honors

A former White County High School Warriorette is continuing to make an impact with Bryan College, just as she did for the Warriorettes during her tenure at White County High School.

Deandra Luna and teammate Karli Combs, of Rutledge, Tennessee, recently earned the NAIA All American Honorable Mention Awards for the Bryan College Lions.

The two Lions added the All-American honors to their already All-AAC First Team awards received at the conclusion of Bryan’s most successful regular-season in program history.
