Sparta outshoots DeKalb in golf

On Sept. 16, the White County High School golf team took part in a golf match vs DeKalb County High School.   The final score totals found with the win in the men’s division. Tyson Welch led the team with a one under par 35. Jeremiah Gardenhire came in right behind Welch with a solid 37.  Trey Crockett followed with a score of 38.  Parker Whited and Jarrett Glass each finished with a score of 40. This gave the Sparta total of 150. DeKalb came in with a total score of 200.


WCHS volleyball takes Sept. 16 match against Crossville

The White County High School volleyball team traveled to Crossville on Sept. 16 to take on Cumberland County High School.  In the first game, Sparta won by a score of 27-25 in a thriller.  The second game went Sparta’s way 25-20 to win the match.

Nia Powers led the team with 7 kills for the match.  Powers also had 1 ace on serve.  Hannah Sims had 6 kills.  Lauren Turner and Caydra Parker added 6 kills each.  Parker added 6 assists in the match.  Lindi Smith had 2 kills and 5 assists.  Taylor Roberts had 2 assists and 1 ace, and Ellie Savage came in


Walker Valley Mustangs ride into Warrior Stadium for homecoming

It’s homecoming week for the Sparta Warriors.  The week has been filled with a homecoming kickoff pep rally, numerous class competitions, and a parade and bonfire to help set the stage for Friday night.

In the midst of all the distractions and activities, the Warrior coaching staff must harness the energy of the Warrior football team to focus on the game that is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff, on Friday.

The Warriors are coming off two consecutive losses.  Christian Academy of Knoxville and Cookeville High School.  The Warriors must attempt to right the course this week against Walker Valley.  Walker Valley is coming in … CONTINUED


Northfield Elementary School defeats Doyle in basketball

The Northfield Huskies took to the courts to open the season with the visiting Doyle Indians.  Northfield won both the boys’ and girls’ games.

The  Northfield girls won the first contest 42-1.  Brooke Burke led Northfield with 12 points and went two from the free-throw line.  Sara Phillips scored 8 points.  Kaydee Stockton had 6 points and Riley Hutson and Anna Armstrong scored 5 points each.  Both went 1 for 2 from the free throw line.  Abigail Alford, Anna McCulley, and Jadelyn Diaz each scored … CONTINUED

Scouts conduct flag retirement ceremony on Sept. 10

On Sept. 10, 2019 Scouts from Cub Scout Pack 294, Troop 128, Venturing Crew 821, and a local Girl Scout Troop, in Sparta, participated in a flag retirement ceremony, at Hickory Valley Volunteer Fire Department, in honor of 9/11. The United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8K states – “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” These flags were donated by members of the community at the Veterans Park flag retirement box that was provided by Eagle Scout Jonathan Cranford.

Through the years, tens of thousands or more basketball fans have watched teams from Tabernacle Baptist Academy play in the Arby’s tournaments at Viking Hall, in Bristol, and hundreds of players have faced them on the court. My wife and I are numbered within the first group – spectators – and our son is one of those who played in those storied tournaments. Coach Dale Burns, Roby Witcher, and many other local folks became very close friends with the Bahamians, especially coach and principal Norris Bain, over the years.

Cassville Elementary receives $3,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant

We are thrilled to announce that Lowe’s has awarded Cassville Elementary School with funding for our Lego Wall. Our grant application was based on the goal of improving the learning community at Cassville. We look forward to sharing the Lego Wall with the Cassville students. The money received from Lowe’s was utilized to provide the students with a Lego wall and Legos in our cafeteria. This wall is used while students are lining up after lunch for busy hands while promoting the use and development of fine motor skills. DAR presents resolution to White County Middle School
