National Down Syndrome Society to feature Brayden Naylor in annual New York City Times Square video

Brayden Naylor, grandson of Sandy Shuburg, of Sparta, and Donnie and Robbie Powell, of Cookeville, will be featured on the big screen in the heart of New York City as a part of the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual Times Square Video presentation, on Sept. 14.

The Times Square Video presentation kicks off Down Syndrome Awareness Month on the morning of the NDSS Buddy Walk, in New York City.

Every year, NDSS reminds the world in a big way about the gifts that people with Down syndrome bring to their communities through a special video presentation on a jumbo screen in the heart of Times Square. The featured … CONTINUED


Geraldine R. Cantrell

Geraldine R. Cantrell, 90, of Cookeville, formerly of Sparta, passed away Sept. 1, 2019, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Bluegrass at amphitheater

A bluegrass concert, which is sponsored by the City of Sparta, will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, at Sparta Amphitheater, on Liberty Square, in downtown Sparta. Featured performers will be “String Wranglers” and “Kenny Stinson and Perfect Tym’n.” In case of rain, the concert will be moved to Sparta Civic Center. Admission is free.
