Brenda Ladale Henderson Bohanon

Brenda Ladale Henderson Bohanon, 73, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 20, 2019, at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, in Nashville.

Mrs. Bohanon was born Nov. 8, 1945, in Sparta.

She attended Wallace-Smith School, in Sparta, and graduated from Darwin High School, in Cookeville.  Mrs. Bohanon attended Kynett United Methodist Church where she was an active and faithful member. She was a true Lady Vols fan. She loved fishing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Bohanon was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred Henderson and A.J. Cullom, and one brother, James Harold Henderson.

Over 100 new officers set to graduate from TLETA on Sept. 27

Over 100 newly certified law enforcement officers are slated to graduate from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy, on Sept. 27, 2019. The graduation ceremony for TLETA Basic Law Enforcement School Class 1869 will be held at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Hermitage Hills Baptist Church (3475 Lebanon Pike) in Hermitage.

Endemic deer virus above average in severity this fall

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency offices are receiving reports of dead deer in scattered areas of the state. The timing and details of many of the reports are indicative of hemorrhagic disease.

Hemorrhagic disease occurs at varying levels of severity each year in Tennessee’s deer herd. So far this year, reports are predominantly coming from Middle Tennessee, and based on the volume of reports it appears to be above average in severity.

Reports to TWRA offices indicate mortality of deer in at least 20 counties with more expected as the season progresses. The last substantial outbreak of HD in Tennessee was in 2017 and was predominantly in East Tennessee. … CONTINUED


Seed Swap to be held Oct. 5 at Tennessee Tech’s Oakley Farm

Tennessee Tech’s Oakley Farm, located in nearby Overton County, will be the site for the annual seed swap on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Several hundred people from as far away as Michigan are expected to gather at the Oakley Farm to buy, sell, share and swap corn, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, okra and cantaloupe seeds.

“We normally have several hundred people attend each year and have had people come from all over this part of the country,” said Michael Best, a professor of agricultural economics and director of the Sustainable Mountain Ag Center. “We have seed vendors set up who sell and trade seeds from several companies and farms.”… CONTINUED


Oktoberfest benefits Sparta-White County Rescue Squad

On Sept. 21, 2019, Happy Trails Brewing Company went all out, holding its inaugural Oktoberfest event, in Sparta, coinciding with the first official day of Oktoberfest, in Munich Germany.

Happy Trails owner Jessica Upchurch teamed up with Sparta-White County Rescue Squad Chief Ray Brown and Bill Loos to bring this family event to Sparta.  Happy Trails was trimmed with Bavarian decorations and provided swag such as alpine hats and necklaces for a donation.  Specially designed 2019 commemorative mugs and t-shirts were also available. Child restraint seat buy-back

Walmart will be sponsoring a child restraint seat buy-back, Sept. 16-30. An individual may bring in an old car seat, and Walmart will give you a $30 gift card to purchase a new car seat. Tennessee Highway Patrol will be joining in the event to help promote child restraint safety. On Sept. 21, Sgt. Ronnie Simmons, along with child restraint device technicians, will be at Walmart, 8 a.m.-noon, conducting a child seat checkup event demonstrating the proper installation of child seats. The community in encouraged to participate in this event and learn more about child restraint safety.


National Voter Registration Day

Secretary of State Tre Hargett encourages all Tennesseans to participate in National Voter Registration Day by registering to vote, checking their voter registration status or showing someone else how to register online

“Registering to vote and participating in our elections is a critical part of our form of government,” Secretary Hargett said. “The first step in taking part in the voting process is to get registered and now is also a good time to confirm that your voter registration information is accurate as well. THP teams up with Walmart for child car seat safety check and buyback

Tennessee Highway Patrol has teamed up with Sparta’s Walmart to sponsor a child restraint device event that began Sept. 16 and continues through Sept. 30. The event consists of a person bringing in an old car seat, and Walmart will give the person a $30 gift card to purchase a new car seat.

On Sept. 21, Sgt. Ronnie Simmons, of THP, along with several other child restraint device technicians with the THP, conducted a child seat checkup, at Walmart, demonstrating the proper installation of car seats. During the event, they installed 14 car seats.

Cassville breakfast

Cassville Volunteer Fire Department will have a ham breakfast, 6-10 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the fire hall, 227 Cassville Lane. The meal will include biscuits and gravy, sausage, eggs, ham, bacon, eggs, fried potatoes, milk, coffee, and orange juice. Cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children. They will deliver orders of five or more. More information or to place orders: (931) 761-2476.
