Steven Martin MacDonell

Steven Martin MacDonell, 68, passed away Nov. 26, 2019, at Saint Thomas River Park Hospital. He was a Spencer resident and a native of Tampa, Florida.

Mr. MacDonell was born Sept. 11, 1951, to Kenneth Archibald MacDonell and Virginia Ruth Martin MacDonell. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a master mechanic for Chrysler and Ford, and was of the Baptist faith.

He was a well-known caver and was a member of the National Speleological Society.  He was a founding member of Spencer Mountain Grotto, a member of the Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Club, and rode with the Christian Motorcycle Association. Jack Leron Cothran

Jack Leron Cothran, 84, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 29, 2019, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mr. Cothran was born Aug. 25, 1935, in Central, South Carolina, to George Washington Cothran and Mary Ann Hicks Cothran.

He was a graduate of Central High School, in Central, South Carolina, and then attended Tri-Country Technical College, in Clemson, South Carolina, where he obtained his associate degree. He later attended Tennessee Tech University, in Cookeville.

Mr. Cothran was plant manager for Mallory Timers for approximately 25 years. He attended First Baptist Church, in Sparta, for many years. Mr. Cothran loved his family, his friends, music, his community, fishing, and golf.… CONTINUED


Lilla Mae Vaughn Bailey

Lilla Mae Vaughn Bailey, 98, of Loudon, passed from this life Nov. 27, 2019, at River Grove Health and Rehabilitation, in Loudon.

She was born May 1, 1921, in Pineville, Mississippi, the daughter of William Vaughn and Florence Wilkins Vaughn.

Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ecil James Bailey; and one son, Ecil James Bailey Jr.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Bailey was a member of First Baptist Church, in Sparta, and sang in the choir for many years. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed homemaking.

Sobriety roadside safety checkpoint: White County

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting Sobriety Roadside Safety Checkpoints starting on December 8th 2019 through December 14th 2019 on State Route 111 in White County.

Impaired driving is a serious crime that kills more than 16,000 people and injures 305,000 others every year in the United States. Troopers will evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Troopers will tar-get those who operate a vehicle while impaired and take corrective actions for other violations observed while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol recognizes that sobriety checkpoints are highly visible and effective tools in the battle against impaired driving.

Community Christmas Eve dinner

Eastland breakfast

Eastland Volunteer Fire Department will host a breakfast, 6-10 a.m., Dec. 7, at the fire hall, 221 Eastland Cemetery Rd. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children age 12 and under. Life Care Center of Sparta raising funds to benefit Alzheimer’s of TN

Life Care Center of Sparta will be selling 2020 picture calendars now through Dec. 13, 2019, to help raise money for Alzheimer’s of Tennessee. These calendars would make great Christmas gifts. They are unique in their own way. To honor those who are living with this heartbreaking disease or in memory of loved ones who have passed away, their picture is placed in the slot on their birthday. Bible scriptures are throughout, and it will be a teaching tool as well on dementia and Alzheimer’s.

WCHS swim team results

On Nov. 9, the White County High School swim team took part in the MTSC Invitational meet, in Lebanon. WCHS finished fifth out of 15 teams, and the women finished fourth out of 9 teams. The individual results are as follows:
