Detectives with White County Sheriff Department received an anonymous tip that led them to an alleged meth lab on Scott Town Road and the arrest of two Sparta men on drug charges.
According to Detective Chris Isom, the anonymous caller said Jeffrey Martin, 34, of Sparta, was reportedly manufacturing methamphetamine in a barn at the end of Scott Town Road.
After the department received the tip, they reportedly alerted the suspect’s probation officer, who gave detectives permission to search the premises.
Det. Isom ssaid detectives Joey Williams and Craig Capps went to the barn where Martin had reportedly been living. As Capps and Williams approached the barn, Det. Isom said Martin and another male, Jason Simms, 31, of Sparta, allegedly ran out the back of the barn, reportedly dropping drug paraphernalia as they fled.
Det. Isom said both men were arrested and charged with initiation of the process to manufacture methamphetamine and are being held on $50,000 bond. Isom said both men were on probation for drug charges at the time of their arrest.
Detectives Capps and Williams removed all drug paraphernalia, including a meth cooking device, as well as chemicals used to manufacture meth from the premises. The meth task force was present to dispose of the products.
Volunteer firefighter Larry Daniels, of Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department, was also present with one fire truck in the event that a fire would erupt as the lab was dissembled and removed from the barn.
During the search, officers discovered a handwritten list of radio frequencies used by officers and emergency workers next to a police scanner inside the barn where the suspects had allegedly been monitoring law enforcement activity.
“Any idiot can make meth. But we will find them,” said Sheriff Oddie Shoupe, who was present the scene.”We’ll chase them anywhere. We’ll follow them in the woods if we have to.
“When they get out of jail, they like to go online and start all these rumors about me, but obviously, my memory is just fine. We’re going to continue to go after these thugs. We’ll never stop.”
