Sparta law enforcement officials have arrested Randy D. Goodwin, 42, of Sparta, in connection with the May 2, 2006, fire at a home on Roosevelt Drive belonging to Iva Presley.
Sgt. Jeff Hutson, Sparta Police Department and lead fire investigator, along with members of the state bomb and arson squad, interviewed Goodwin and on May 15 charged him with a class C felony arson in the case.
Goodwin had been arrested for driving on revoked license, third offense, just days before he was charged with arson.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, Sgt. Travis Barker was dispatched to West Bockman Way, near the Sparta city limits, at approximately 5:35 p.m., May 13, 2006, about a possible drunk driver. Witnesses observed the vehicle turn south on Highway 111.
Barker found a vehicle matching the description near the entrance of Woodland Park Elementary School. A male subject, identified as Goodwin, was standing outside the vehicle.
The officer asked for his license, and Goodwin said his license had been revoked. Barker smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverage about Goodwin’s breath and person, and when asked, the subject advised the officer he had drunk one beer.
Barker asked Goodwin to perform several field sobriety tasks, which the subject completed satisfactorily.
Goodwin was then charged with driving on revoked license, third offense.
Goodwin was scheduled to make his initial appearance in court May 19, 2006.
