Benefield dies in Grundy County crash

A 41-year-old White County man was killed Friday when his vehicle crashed into a tree near Altamont.
According to a report from the Chattanooga district of Tennessee Highway Patrol, James Benefield was traveling north on Highway 108, near Altamont, around 8:30 a.m., May 30, 2008, when his 2002 Ford went off the right side of the road. Benefield reportedly overcorrected, crossed the highway and struck a tree.  When the vehicle struck the tree, Benefield was ejected. According to Trooper Tim Garner’s report, Benefield was not wearing a seat belt.
Also traveling with Benefield was a 23-month-old child who was properly restrained and uninjured in the crash, according to the report.
