On Feb. 18, the Warriorettes took on the Cumberland County Lady Jets at Warren County High School for a chance to go to the District Tournament on the line. On Saturday night, Hannah Leftwich came out like a woman on a mission. Leftwich scored over half of the Warriorettes points and was able to pull down 14 rebounds on Saturday night. But the Warriorettes came up just short falling to the Lady Jets 57-47.

At this time of the year, it’s all about surviving and advancing, and the Warriorette basketball team did just that. The Warriorettes found themselves 21-27 at halftime, on Friday night, against a very athletic East Hamilton team on their home court in what could have been the season and the careers of the four seniors.

Over the remainder of the game, the Warriorettes outscored the Lady Hurricanes 33-24 for the 54-51 victory and secured a spot in the Region 3AAA semifinals.

Region tourneys begin on Friday

High school region basketball tournaments begin all across the state of Tennessee, on Friday, but not all brackets have been confirmed as of press time.

Everyone knows their first games. The TSSAA mandates that all girls’ region quarterfinal games are played Friday at the site of the higher seeded team, at 7 p.m., local time. The boys’ quarterfinal games follow, on Saturday, at the site of the higher seeded team, also at 7 p.m.

What that means for the local teams is that three of the four will be hosting first round games.

Warriors defeat Cavaliers on a last second shot to win the 6AAA District Tournament

On Tuesday night, White County took over the Warren County gymnasium in more ways than one. The bleachers were filled with White County faithful who seemed to at least quadruple the number of Cookeville fans there.

The Warriors were able to get the win also on Tuesday night when Cole Crosland hit a 15-foot shot off balanced with 8.6 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Warriors the win over the Cookeville Cavaliers 39-37 in the District 6AAA Tournament Championship. This win sends the Warriors into the region tournament with the #1 seed.

Luna’s big night helps propel the Warriorettes to victory over Cookeville in overtime

On Monday evening, the Warriorettes traveled down to Warren County to take on the Cookeville Lady Cavaliers. This game was the fourth time these two teams have met this season. With Cookeville winning two of the three matchups earlier.

On Monday night, Deandra Luna had her best game of the year. Luna finished with 30 points and hit the game-winning shot, with 6.2 seconds left on the clock to help lead the Warriorettes to a 64-63 win in overtime over the Cookeville Cavaliers.

Warriorettes advance in first game of the District Tournament

On Tuesday night, the Warriorettes traveled to McMinnville to take on the Rhea County Lady Eagles in the first round of the District Tournament. This meeting was the second time last week the Warriorettes faced off against the Lady Eagles. The Warriorettes took on the Lady Eagles on Feb. 13 and were able to come away with a 61-51 win. On Friday night, the Warriorettes were able to defeat the Lady Eagles 69-60 thanks in large part to free throws. The Warriorettes got almost half of their points from the free throw line. The Warriorettes scored 33 of their 69 points from the free throw line.

Bouldin has a big night, but Mocs fall in overtime

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga suffered a setback Thursday night with a 75-72 overtime loss to UNCG in Southern Conference women’s basketball action at Fleming Gym.

The loss was the Mocs first to the Spartans since 2007, snapping UTC’s 23 game win streak against UNCG.

“They were a hungry basketball team,” Chattanooga head coach Jim Foster said. “They outworked us in my opinion.”

Chattanooga started out the fourth quarter with a 54-50 lead and stretched it to nine points with 8:01 to play. The Spartans answered with a 15-2 run to take a 65-61 lead with 2:30 to play in the game.

The regular season is in the books, and now it gets down to what coaches consider the third season – the postseason.

The games that have been played to this point are just a buildup for what is to come. Seasons come and seasons go, but the truth of the matter is that teams are remembered for what they do in the postseason. For the White County High School teams, that starts this week.

The District 6AAA tournament gets underway Thursday and runs through Tuesday, at Warren County High School.

Van Buren County – Mills named District 6A Player of the Year and Sullivan named Coach of the Year

Van Buren Eagles Head Coach Dustin Sullivan was voted as the Boys’ Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a 21-6 regular season record and a 12-0 District 6A record.

When the coaches of District 6A got together last week to finalize plans for their district tournament and vote on the All District team, Van Buren County had a lot of names on the list.

It came as no surprise to anyone that the top superlative honors came back to Spencer. Caden Mills dominated games all season long and is the leading scorer on his respective team that finished undefeated in league play.

On Monday night, The Warriorettes traveled Evensville to take on the Rhea County Lady Eagles. This game was the last regular-season game for the Warriorettes, and they were able to come out with a win in this game.

The Warriorettes never trailed on Monday night, and during the game, the Warriorettes’ lead was only within 1 point twice. The Warriorettes led by one in the first and fourth quarters. Warriors complete the season sweep over Rhea County

The last time the Warriors played in Evensville, they broke the state record for 3-pointers in a game with 31 3’s and came out with a win. On Friday night the Warriors returned to Evensville, but this time they weren’t able to break a state record, but they were able to get the win. The Warriors would never trail in this game and would lead 36-15 at the half and then outscore the Eagles 36-32 in the second half and win by a final score of 72-47.

Bouldin’s big night helps lead Lady Mocs over ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga outscored ETSU 26-8 in the third quarter Friday night at Brooks Gym to claim a 70-62 win over the Bucs in Southern Conference women’s basketball action. The Mocs improve to 15-9 on the year and 9-1 in league play and hold on to first in the SoCon standings. ETSU falls to 14-11 overall and 6-4 against the conference.

“We were tentative, we weren’t aggressive in the first half,” Chattanooga head coach Jim Foster said. “The second half was a completely different story. I challenged them. I wasn’t happy with us at halftime. It was inexplicable to me.”
