Celebrating a special day all month

Playl’s Ponderings – by Steve Playl
June is a month of memories. These 30 days contain the anniversary of several extremely significant events and celebrations – such as D Day and Father’s Day. Named for the mythological Roman goddess of marriage, Juno, the sixth month in our calendar is also a popular month for weddings.
When Sammie and I set the date for our wedding, on June 7, we were unaware of the etymology behind the name “June.” We just knew that we were in love, and I was leaving town, following my graduation from college, to pursue my seminary education in a galaxy far, far away… New Orleans.
June 2019 we have celebrated that anniversary throughout the entire month…at least to this point. The years have passed like mile markers on the interstate, but we have attempted to relive many of those years.
The first time ever I saw her face was during a worship service at Glendale Baptist Church, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She was seated about halfway between front and back of the sanctuary, and I was in the choir. My heart skipped a few beats when I laid eyes on her. When my heart came back to me, I knew – right there in my heart – that she would be my wife. True story!
Inquiring as to her identity, I learned from our pastor that she was very young, but I waited, impatiently, for her to reach acceptable dating age. After going to church together for a while and chasing her around the piano, at youth gatherings, I asked her father for her hand in marriage. Later, I talked him into signing the marriage license.
At the wedding rehearsal, “Pop Johnnie” joked that when he walked her down the aisle, he was going to stop halfway to the altar and suggest that the two of them flee. Didn’t happen, though. They were both too emotional for my very-soon-to-be father-in-law to apply humor.
So…on the day after the 75th anniversary of D Day, this year, our anniversary occurred. Next day, our children hosted a celebration with family and friends in the house that has been our home for more than 30 years now. All four of our children were born prior to our move to Maryland Avenue. God has continued to bless us with seven grandchildren.
Our home was filled with memorabilia from our wedding, honeymoon and the ensuing years. Sammie’s wedding dress was on display, and I wore the same tie I had worn as I anxiously awaited my betrothed at the altar that night long ago. For the past several days, we have relived our life together – from when we actually met, while Christmas caroling, a few months after I first spotted her from the choir loft – through all our precious years together.
As I write these words, we are relaxing on the Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island, at Crews Inn, a quaint B and B we have frequented in the past few years. This is our anniversary trip. We are very thankful for God’s blessings, especially that He brought us together.
Proverbs 18:22 says that whoever finds a wife finds what is good and finds favor with God. Looking back on my life, with my wife, I have to say, “AMEN, to that!”
Some days are better than others, but I wouldn’t trade any of my days as Sammie’s husband with anybody. God is good all the time! How has he blessed you?
