Essie Irene Cope, 97, passed away Aug. 26, 2006, at Life Care in Sparta.
Cope was born Oct. 18,1908, in DeKalb County, to James Edward Shaw and Elizabeth Hayes Shaw.
Her enjoyments in life were sewing, crocheting, family and friends. She was married to Erman Cope 49 years.
Cope was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Charles Douglas Cope; three sisters, Nettie Hawkins, Jessie Adcock, and Pauline Goines; and one brother, Bill Shaw.
Survivors include five daughters and spouses, Ernestine Slatton, Bobbie Jean Davis, both of Sparta, Nina and Curtis Griffin, of Mt. Juliet, Ruth and Leslie Anderson and Brenda and Carl Fraiser, all of Sparta; two sons and spouses, William and Mary Cope and James and Gail Cope, all of Sparta; one brother, James Shaw, of Texas; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three nieces, Opal Barlow, Ruby Griffin and Agnes Hutson.
Services were 2 p.m., Aug. 27, 2006, at the chapel of Thurman Funeral Home with burial in the Peeled Chestnut Cemetery. Bro. John Pippin officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
