Eugene “Gene” Elrod

Eugene “Gene” Elrod, 83, of Lapeer, Mich., passed away Oct. 10, 2006.
Elrod was born Jan. 22, 1923, in White County, to William True and Laura Martin Elrod.
He was a proud, decorated World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and served as an elder at the Lapeer Church of Christ for more than 15 years. Elrod enjoyed upholstering, fine furniture finishing for 30 years, gardening, fishing, hunting, and golf. He had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. The family said he never met a stranger. Everyone who came to his home had to stay for a meal. He was “Papa” to his grandchildren, plus many more children who knew and loved him.
Elrod was preceded in death by his siblings, Lorene, Louise, Ann L. and William and his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Elrod, of Lapeer, Mich.; children, Steve and wife Ruth Elrod, of Novi, Mich., Janice and husband John Cappell, of Royal Oak, Mich., Beverly and husband Danny Pittman, of Lapeer, Mich., Lorie and husband Patrick Powell, of North Branch, Mich.; grandchildren, Sara and husband William “B.J.” McMurray, Adam, Nick, and Anna Tallman, Kristine and Katherine Elrod; step-grandchildren, Matthew and Erin Cappell, Chelsea and Ashley Powell; siblings, Artis and Martha Elrod, of Tennessee, Ravenelle Elrod and George and Charlotte Elrod, of Sparta.
Memorial contributions can be made to Heartland Hospice. Funeral services were 1 p.m. on Oct. 13, 2006 at Lapeer Church of Christ. Kent Hoggett officiated. The church service was immediately followed by a military salute under the auspices of the American Legion Post #16 Honor Guard. Burial was held at Christian Memorial Cemetery, of Rochester Hills.
Muir Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
