Gaines Herbert Hale

Gaines Herbert Hale, 89, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 29, 2013, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mr. Hale was born April 12, 1923, in the Lost Creek Community, of White County, to late Enoch and Emily Sophronia Wilson Hale.
He was a retired farmer and miller. He owned and operated Hale’s Feed Mill for many years and was a pig farmer. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Navy pilot. He joined Sparta First Baptist Church, on Dec. 2, 1945, and was a very active member in his 68 years of membership.
Mr. Hale was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Hillis Hale; brothers, Arthur Hale and Samuel Oscar Hale; sisters Bessie Thomas and Lily Spiva.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Van Hooser Hale, of Sparta; children and spouses, Betty Ward, of Virginia Beach, Va., Nancy and Keith Blue, of Franklin, Carol and Charles Hembree, of Montgomery, Texas, Mary Jane and Denny Bennett, of Franklin, Gaines Herbert Hale Jr. and Cynthia, of Sparta; 13 grandchildren, Clark Ward, Patty Lentini, Elizabeth Williams, Wayne Erwin, Damon Hembree, Adrian Hembree, Mike Hembree, Mary Lou Tays, Emily Bennett, Sarah Bennett, Dennis Bennett, Casey Hale, Connor Hale; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Feb. 1, 2013, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Lost Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Jan. 31, at the Hunter Funeral Home. J.D. Davis will officiate.

Frances Barbara Nixon
Frances Barbara “Fran” Nixon, 85 of Grand Rapids, Mich., formerly of Sparta, passed away recently in Michigan.
She was the beloved wife for 65 wonderful years to Roy Nixon Jr.; dear mother of Roy II I (Karen), Robert (Cynthia), Barbara (James) Mazeika, Thomas (Romana); proud grandmother of Michael, Stephanie, Jennifer (Robert) Starzyk, Carrie (Christiaan) Beels, Katherine (Ryan) Birtles, Joseph Mazeika, Elizabeth Mazeika, Andrew, Julianna and Deanna. Mrs. Nixon is also survived by her beloved six great-grandchildren and her siblings, Betty Dunkel, Paul (Peggy) Grossnickle and Susan (John) Barnhill
In keeping with the Nixon family’s wishes, a simple cremation was arranged. Burial following the cremation took place at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammondsport, N.Y.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
