Leftwich’s big night not enough to carry Warriorettes into District Championship

On Feb. 18, the Warriorettes took on the Cumberland County Lady Jets at Warren County High School for a chance to go to the District Tournament on the line. On Saturday night, Hannah Leftwich came out like a woman on a mission. Leftwich scored over half of the Warriorettes points and was able to pull down 14 rebounds on Saturday night. But the Warriorettes came up just short falling to the Lady Jets 57-47.
In the first quarter, Cumberland County jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on the Warriorettes. Deandra Luna got the Warriorettes on the board when she hit a layup with 2:15 remaining in the first quarter to make the score 7-2. After a Lady Jets three, Leftwich got her night started hitting a pair of free throws with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Warriorettes would trail 10-4 heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Leftwich got the Warriorettes started scoring the first five points of the second quarter. She got it started when she went one of two from the free throw line, and then she hit a layup to cut the Lady Jets lead down to 7-10. She would finish her scoring run off by hitting a pair of free throws with 6:34 remaining in the first half to make the score 10-9 for the Lady Jets. After Cumberland County had scored five straight points, Leftwich scored a layup to make the score 15-11 with 5:12 remaining in the first half. Cumberland County would score the next seven points, but Leftwich would end their run when she hit a pair of free throws to bring the Warriorettes within nine with 2:46 remaining in the first half. Cumberland County would hit a pair of free throws, but the Warriorettes would close out the first half on a 7-0 run. It Started when Megan Anderson hit a shot with 1:27 remaining in the second quarter, and then Luna hit a couple of free throws to cut the Lady Jets lead down to seven with 46 seconds left in first half. Kendreah Reeves closed out the scoring in the first half when she hit a step back three to cut the Lady Jets lead down to 24-20 heading into the half.
In the third quarter, Leftwich and Cumberland County traded baskets back and forth to start the third quarter until Cumberland County scored four straight points to take a 35-27 lead, but the Warriorettes would answer back scoring four straight points of their own. Luna started it getting a pair of free throws to go down, and on the next Warriorettes possession Leftwich hit a layup to cut the Lady Jets lead to 35-31 with 2:23 remaining in the third quarter. Cumberland County would close out the third quarter scoring the last four points and take a 39-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter of play, the Warriorettes would start the quarter off outscoring the Lady Jets 8-2 to cut the Lady Jets lead down to two. Julia Curtis got the first basket of the fourth quarter to make the score 39-33, and then Deandra Luna hit a three with 6:45 remaining in the game to cut the Lady Jets lead down to three. Cumberland County would hit a pair of free throws with 5:51 remaining in the game but Leftwich would answer back with a three-point play on the other end when she hit a layup and got fouled. She would go to the free throw line and hit the free throw to cut the Lady Jets lead to 41-39 with 5:29 remaining in the game, but that’s as close as the Warriorettes would get as the Lady Jets would score 11 straight points a take a 52-39 lead. The Warriorettes would get back within ten when Brooke Stoglin hit a layup to cut the Lady Jets lead to 55-45 with 1:15 remaining in the game but that as close as the Warriorettes would get as the final score was 57-47 for the Lady Jets.
