Charles William Dodson, 80, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 12, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Dodson was born March 12, 1922, in Kentucky, to Fletcher Dodson and Hazel Etta Miller Dodson.
He served in World War II and had been employed at Cumberland Manufacturing.
Dodson was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Lucille Dodson of Sparta and one daughter and son-in-law, Rachel Louise and John Edward Bennett of Sparta.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Dec. 15, 2002, at the chapel of Thurman Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery. Bro. Jim Scott and Bro. Freddie Copeland officiated.

Otis Kelsey, 77, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 13, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Kelsey was born April 2, 1925, in White County, to William Amos and Florence Vina Young Kelsey.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired farmer.
Kelsey was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Chester Kelsey, Aaron Kelsey and Roy Kelsey; and one sister, Cora Kelsey Brady.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright, 76, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 15, 2002.
Wright was born July 15, 1926, in Franklin, Ohio, to Lloyd Wright and Elizabeth Wilmoth Wright.
He was retired from the Merchant Marines and U.S. Air Force, where he as an aviation mechanic. Wright was a member of Sparta Masonic Lodge #99 F&AM and the American Legion.

Samuel Perry Drake, 73, of Brownsville, passed away Dec. 15, 2
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Perry Drake of Brownsville; one daughter, Laura Cleek of Sparta; one sister, Juanita Haynes of Brownsville; and two brothers, Earnest Drake and William Drake both of Brownsville.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Dec. 17, 2002, at Brownsville Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Providence Cemetery.

Charles Dave Payne, 79, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 14, 2002, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Payne was born Jan. 26, 1923, in White County, to Charles Houston and Cassie Glasner Payne.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been employed at Thomas Industries.
Survivors include his wife, Melvie Mae Simmons Payne of Sparta; two sons, Tony Payne and Kenny Payne of Sparta; one daughter, Judy Sullivan of Sparta; two brothers, Clifford “Buddy” Payne and Bill Payne both of Sparta; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Ella Thurman Morgan, 75, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 14, 2002, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Morgan was born Feb. 15, 1927, in White County, to Waymon and Princy Lee Turner Thurman.
She had been the co-owner of Morgan Furniture.
Morgan was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mollye Thurman Swindell; and one brother, Joe Thurman.
Survivors include her husband, William T. “Bill” Morgan of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law, Kim Morgan White and Phillip White of Brentwood; two sisters, Pauline Conklin and Ruth Austin both of Nashville; and two grandchildren, Morgan White and Sydney White.

Doyle students are featured at school board meeting

The excitement of learning with new and innovative programs was the focus of the White County Board of Education meeting on Thursday, as students from Doyle Elementary School were honored for their accomplishments.
Members of the board and parents were treated to a special presentation by several students, which demonstrated new software especially designed to adapt to all ages and levels of study. Carmilla Cocke, technology coordinator for the White County School System, explained to the audience about the Orchard software and its correlation to required testing by the state. Sparta recertified for 11th Three-Star Award

“Being a Three-Star Community lets prospective businesses and industries know you’re ready for economic development,” said Wallace Austin, president of the Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce. “This lets them know we are the ‘best of the best.”
Sparta has been a Three-Star Community for 10 years and was recently recertified for its 11th year. According to Austin, the recertification process takes place every two years and there are numerous requirements.
The Three-Star Program was created 20 years ago to help communities take full advantage of economic development opportunities. The goals are to preserve existing employment, create new employment opportunities, increase Tennessee family incomes, improve quality … CONTINUED

Betty Sue Phifer Davis, 62, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 9, 2002.
Davis was born May 12, 1940, in White County, to Roy and Lela Spakes Phifer.
She was a retired nurse.
Davis was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Kimberly Davis of Sparta; one grandson, Kyle Davis of Sparta; and one brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Ruby Phifer of Quebeck.
Services were held at 8 p.m., Dec. 11, 2002, at Hunter Funeral Home. Fate Wilson officiated.

James Edward Cox

James Edward Cox, 73, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 10, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Cox was born Oct. 22, 1929, in White County, to Green Cox and Rosa Lee White Cox.
He had been employed at the Shirt Factory.
Cox was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, George Cox, Beecher Cox, Henry Cox and one infant brother; and two sisters, Dora Mae Cox and Mary Lou Cox.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Ollie Rhea Cox Geer and Bob Cox of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.
