Fannie L. Wair Isbell, 84, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 16, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Isbell was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Gibson County, to William Taylor and Carrie Inman Taylor.
She was preceded in death by Clyde William Wair.
Survivors include four sons, Clyde W. Wair, Virgil L. Wair and Wesley E. Wair all of Sparta and James E. Frances Pauline Lowery Rowland, 78, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 13, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Rowland was born Dec. 11, 1923, in White County, to Henry and Edna Knowles Lowery.
She had been a homemaker.
Rowland was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jeral Ross Rowland, one daughter, Donna Carole Hash; and two brothers, Hugh Gordon Lowery and W.H. Lowery.

Thomas L. Miller

Thomas L. Miller passed away Aug. 15, 2002.
Miller was a member and deacon of Two Rivers Baptist Church. He had retired from Genesco after 42 years.
Survivors include his wife, Grace A. Miller; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and H. Owen Maddux of Signal Mountain and Sarah and Michael D. Wingo of Decatur Ala.; six grandchildren, Will Maddux, Tom Maddux, Laura Maddux, Andrew Maddux, Jon Wingo and Matt Wingo; and two brothers, William B. Miller of Johnson City and Robert S. Miller of Daytona, Fla.

Dimple Shelton Moss, 87, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 17, 2002.
Moss was born July 10, 1915, in White County, to James Marvin and Nevada Price Shelton.
She had been a store clerk.
Moss was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include three sons, Byron S. Moss Sr. of Ooltewah, Levon Moss of Chattanooga and William (Billy) Marvin Moss of Tullahoma; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Aug. 19, 2002, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Bro. Fate Wilson will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sally Blaylock Dunn, 83, of Quebeck, passed away Aug. 17, 2002, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Dunn was born March 4, 1919, in White County, to Frank and Laura Tollison Blaylock.
She had been a homemaker.
Dunn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Evans Monroe Dunn; one son, Robert L. Dunn; one daughter, Rosell Brock; and two grandsons, Bobby Dunn and Dennis Dunn.

Sparta board welcomes new mayor and aldermen

The new mayor of Sparta, Tommy Pedigo, took over the reins of the City of Sparta at the regular monthly meeting on August 15.
Pedigo took the gavel from outgoing mayor, Claude Bradley, at the beginning of the meeting, and was administered the oath of office by City Recorder Tonya Tindle.
Also taking the oath of office were three re-elected aldermen, Hoyt Jones, Bobby Officer, and Jim Payne. Jones, by virtue of receiving the most votes in the recent election, was reappointed as vice-mayor.
In other personnel matters, City Attorney Lynn Haston retired from his post, and Mayor Pedigo appointed Lynn Sparkman to replace Haston, with … CONTINUED

Members of the Sparta Police Department solemnly exited the First United Methodist Church on Friday as they carried their fellow officer and friend, Sgt. Elmore Carter Jr., to his final resting place. Over 30 emergency services vehicles escorted the funeral procession.


One fatality after vehicle strikes fire truck

Jimmie D. Thompson, 25, of Sparta, died in a two-vehicle crash on Bockman Way and Carter Street on Saturday, after his vehicle struck a fire truck.
According to Officer Dale Dodson, of the Sparta Police Department, Thompson was traveling east on Bockman Way, in a 1989 Mazda, when the accident occurred. Robert Pittman, 35, of Sparta and Michael Presley, 38, of Crossville, were passengers in the Mazda. Thompson allegedly ran a red light and authorities said alcohol was involved. Dodson said the occupants in the Mazda were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Hubert Houston Bumbalough

Hubert Houston Bumbalough, 92, of Doyle, passed away Aug. 12, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Bumbalough was born Dec. 10, 1909, in Warren County, to Neri F. and Sarah Randolph Bumbalough.
He served in the U.S. Army during World II and was a survivor of the Normandy Landings. Bumbalough had been a laborer.
Bumbalough was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, David Bumbalough; two sisters; and five brothers.

Charles (Charlie) Walter Mooney, 77, of Cookeville, passed away Aug. 11, 2002, at Bethesda Healthcare Center in Cookeville.
Mooney was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Massachusetts, to George Gilbert and Louise Mary Martineau Mooney.
He attended a Baptist church and was retired from the printing business.
Mooney was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Louise Williams Mooney; one sister, Barbara
Rodgers; and three brothers, Donald, Ralph and Harlan Mooney.

Johnnie D. Young, 54, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 11, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
Young was born April 7, 1948, to Alvin Young Jr. and Ellen Stinnett Young.
He served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam and had been employed at Mallory Timers.
Young was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Young.
